So sure was I that Richard Dawson was dead that I included that "fact" in yesterday's blog in my summation of the Game Show Network's Countdown of Greatest Game Show Hosts of All Time. I said that I used to dislike Dawson, but since he died I'd grown fond of him.
Well I heard from you all loud and clear. He's alive and I know it. And I would like to publicly apologize to Mr. Dawson and his family for any harm that yesterday's blog did.
I was SURE that Dawson was dead. Positive! I had mourned him and come around to appreciating him and everything. And all this begs the question of who else is alive that I had been counting as dead? From that list of game show hosts I will swear on a stack of bibles that Bill Cullen, Alan Ludden, and Gene Rayburne are dead. Definitely. Dead. I have mourned them and they are dead and I think of each of them fondly.
And I am so happy to report that Betty White is alive, still. And I love her. But now that I know that Dawson is alive, my sympathy has shifted. I am remembering the sexual harrasment on "Family Feud" and "too cool for Fannie Flagg" attitude on "Match Game" and too-tight suits and the belly sticking out. And, so I hate to say it but I think he is in my "I don't care for him" column once again. Which is really miserable and mean of me.
Also in that "I don't care for him" column is the very much alive, but deadbeat at heart, Isaiah Washington. I haven't really been enraged or insane about following his daily travails, but I did find it kind of IRONIC -- to say the least -- that he was awarded an NAACP Image Award Friday night. The Image Awards are supposed to promote positive images of blacks in the media. I don't think he has presented the most positive image of late.
