Me and Diana Ross and James Lipton

April 09, 2007

From now on, I'm hoping that James Lipton is my date for every concert I see. He took Bruce, Troy and I to see Diana Ross at Madison Square Garden's Theater on Friday night and it was a T-rip.

I've been a Diana Ross fan since I can remember and Jim has known Ross for longer. His "Inside the Actors Studio" with the singer was a triumph; I figured when I asked someone on his staff to get me tickets that they would actually come from someone on his staff and not the man himself.

He, naturally, scored such fantastic seats and when the first strains of "I'm Coming Out" wafted from the stage, we got the sense that the concert was just being performed for us.

The audience was thirsty, begging almost, for the diva and her showbiz bag of tricks. It was madness everytime she flipped her hair (every :22) or did a twirl (every :45). She changed clothes four or five times and Bruce correctly predicted her next color almost every time. (I believe it was red, white, white, black and yellow.)

She sang hit after hit after hit all in about 90 minutes. From my anthem, "The Boss," to hers, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," her voice sounded fantastic and the cheering crowd stood for the entire time. During "Upside Down," she introduced Nile Rodgers, who wrote and produced the song as well as "I'm Coming Out" and more off that amazing album. He was sitting next to Bruce and we freaked.

Before a soliloquy about her love for her fans, she did a classic "Can we bring the lights up.... I want to see you" move. That's what you call SHOWBIZ, folks. It don't happen much anymore. I felt like I was in a Vegas lounge and I never wanted to leave.

She doesn't have a Cher sized show going because as a solo act she is an old "Dianasaur" who lost much of her mass audience years ago. As a member of the legendary Supremes, she will always be a legend; however, there aren't many people left who want to see an aging egomaniac strutting around with a failing voice saying, "It's all about me....it's always been about me...I am a star......I WAS the Supremes." People are fed up with her. Have you forgotten the "Return to Love"
tour and the drunk driving? She's finished. Go buy a Suypremes CD if you want to hear Diane in her prime. The legend of the Supremes will always be greater than the sum of its parts. Diane is merely one of those parts!

Andy thanks for the behind the scenes of the fantabulous, delicious, Supreme and the MOST IMPORTANT..... Supreme...DIAN ROSS I envy you the access.
I too Loved the show, love her every move, and the audience was right with her all through.
As for the a******s who cant let it go. Yes, when one thinks or hear a Supremes song they think and hear Diana's voice. Neil, get over it. As is being proven Diana's is just as relevant today as yesterday like all those other diansaurs(like Striesand, Cher, Dionne).....and she can still pack the house. All her show have sold out for the I LOVE YOU TOUR.
Wishing Diana will be, as you say "finished" wont make it so. So chillout and listen to albums if thats all you want to do.
...and what an astounding observation: a singer, celibrity, who is an egomaniac. Wow!!! how unusual.

I saw her once at a corporate gig and it was not pretty. It was in a big arena and so there were TV Cameras shooting her so they could put her in the big screen over the stage. She stopped the show several times to get the crew to stop putting her up on the big screen. She was not happy about it and would stop singing when she turned and saw herself up there. She got pretty mad about it and we all sat there kind of stunned wondering if she was going to walk off. It was a very awkward performance... I felt wierd afterwards.

Glad your performance was better!

I am not sure what world Neil lives in but he must be somewhat sheltered(or just plain ignorant of the facts). Diana Ross has not lost her Mass Appeal any more than Patti, Aretha, Barbara Streisand, Cher etc. or any other female singer of her time. For that matter, even the Female singers that came after her, some she helped pave the way for, Madonna, Janet, Celine, Whitney etc, no longer has a "Mass Appeal" as they once did when they were hot. That is the nature of the business in the United States (UK & abroad appreciates legends more). If Neil really did research, he would find that Ross has had longer legevity not only in the States, but especially abroad, than any other female singer during her time, before her time, and even today. Get it right Neil or don't even bother. I hate ignorance. Her Legend began with the Supremes but it continued into her solo caree. It is both her "Supreme" years & her Solo years that makes her the Legendary/Iconic figure she is today.

A lot has been said and written about Diana Ross, and not all of it has been positive. I don't know her personally, so that, I won't comment on, but as an entertainer and recording artist, she has more than earned her stripes. She has given us years of great music, and live performances, and will go down in history, as one of the greats of her time. I only wish, she'd give us another CD, and not covers well maybe a few, but original music, worth listening too. And a reunion tour with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, would be the tour of all tours. What do you think?

DIANA ROSS IS THE DIVA ABOVE ALL DIVA!
SHE IS MORE THEN SUPREME. DINA ROSS WAS SUPERB ON HER NEW ALBUM I LOVE YOU. DIANA SUNG THE HELL OUT OF THAT SONG I WANT YOU. FUTHERMORE SHE LOOK SENSATIONAL AT 63 YEARS OLD. ROSS LOOK LIKE SHE IS ONLY 35 YEARD OLD. GOD BLESS HER ALWAYS. SHE IS TEN TIMES BETTER THAN THAT HUSSEY BEYONCE! BELIEVE ME BEYONCE'S CAREER WILL NEVER LAST 40 YEARS?

Neil wrote:

Diane most certainly HAS lost her mass appeal. The "I Love You" CD has reported dismal sales that indicate a lack of general interest. Her primary fan base as a solo act are single men in their forties who live near urban areas. With the exception of locations in or near the New York area, the venues where she is appearing on her concert tour are considerably smaller than any she has ever been booked in before. Her singing performance on American Idol was met with reviews that were embarrassing. One of the more kind reviewers stated that if Diane were one of the contestants, she would have been voted off first. I know that Diane's "Ross as a solo act" fans are a formidable group; however, don't confuse strength with numbers. Diane is an icon from the past that reminds us older people of the glory days of THE LEGENDARY SUPREMES and you guys in your forties of your glory days in the 70's and 80's. No matter how you try to configure it.....Diane is more yesterday than today and the same seems to be true ablout her most ardent fans.

It is you that is the true Goddess of the world!", tell all the haters to NOT HATE BUT CONGRATULATE! Diana, smiles walks away and decends into heaven,God made her that way! Diana will always get the last laugh!

wow. sure a lot of conflicting comments about miss ross.
i do have to say that she does take some time to warm up. i just wish she would warm up a little more before performing, especially on live tv. her performance on gma was disappointing (messing up the words and then finally and obviously giving in to lip syncing which was a good idea). on american idol she messed up the words again as the judges were all over the contestants messing up their words! don't get me wrong, i love diana, but what's up with her and her memory of words to songs that she's sung for years? i hope she's ok. d.i.v.a. (diana. is. very. awesome., but...
