Legends too often come out of retirement. Even when they aren't really missed.
Not Kiki & Herb. Their “retirement” in 2004 after a blow-out concert at Carnegie Hall was premature, which only made it more poignant. Who in the audience didn’t feel for Justin Bond (Kiki) and Kenny Mellman (Herb) and sympathise with their desire to do something new? (Yes, we at OUTzone news were there, laughing and mostly crying, sometimes simultaenously.)
But that doesn’t mean we are not THRILLED by the confirmation that they’re back.
The downtown theater scene's most dysfunctional duo are heading for the big time. ''Kiki & Herb: Alive on Broadway'' opens Aug. 15 at the Helen Hayes Theatre for a four-week run. Preview performances begin Aug. 11.
The new show is written and performed by Justin Bond, better known as that aging, liquor-loving chanteuse Kiki, and Kenny Mellman, who portrays Herb, her loyal, long-suffering accompanist.
