Bold Step for New Jersey

December 29, 2006

20061229_corzine_220x260.jpgWell, here’s a good way to start your 2007 – move to New Jersey!

According to an article at 365gay.com, mayors, judges and other officials across the state are being told that if they refuse to perform civil union ceremonies for civil union ceremonies for same-sex couples – they will be prosecuted.

John M. Carbone, an attorney representing county clerks in all 21 New Jersey counties, told the officials, "Either do marriages and civil unions, or do nothing."

Well, we’re totally on board with this one. It’s about time somebody faced legal consequences for discriminating against same-sex rights. The best part, is that refusing to conduct a civil union can bring a fine that begins at $10,000. And that’s just the first offense.

This is all in response to a poll conducted by The Bridgeton News, which found that very few officials and only one mayor in the state said they were willing to perform civil union ceremonies. (You can send flowers to Fairfield Township Mayor Craig Thomas – he’s the brave one.)

Legal ramifications for same-sex discrimination. We love it.

Call me cynical, but you can bet that the circumstances (whatever they were) that lead up to this outspoken caution aimed at the targeted officials, are unlikely to reoccur, at least in their specifics. Whatever technical pressures said officials are most recently under to perform and uphold unions they are obviously opposed to endorsing, will quickly become null and void as they find other ways of acting on their own ideals (as they have already been doing quite undeniably for this to continue to be an issue).

There are supposedly "50 ways to leave your lover"? You can guarantee there are a million and one ways of wriggling out of doing something you REALLY don't want to do.

Having laws to recognise equality is essential. Having people of authority speak out to uphold those laws is noble. But people are people, and each has an agenda of their own.

You can bully someone into doing something they don't want to do for a time, but people are most inventive, cunning and even devious when it comes to getting what they want. I don't think you can ultimately change a person's beliefs by force, however wrong they may be. Oppression - even objective oppression - is doomed to brevity.

Not to put a damper on hope, we may not be able to get too excited by this piece of news yet we can be assured that it is another ripple in the pond of awareness, and will be recorded and referenced for the next generation to disect and learn from.
