Don't Care About Gays

December 20, 2006

20061219_nph_260x220.jpgAccording to a poll conducted by OUTzoneTV.com in conjunction with our Sexiest 2007 poll, 40+% of people were surprised to learn that Neil Patrick Harris is gay. (These people obviously don't live in NYC where Neil's been "out" for years.) And only 19% were surprised that Lance Bass is gay; same goes for Ellen.

This, we are skeptical of. Maybe people just like to act like they know everything/know better.

In other interesting/good news: Television watchers in general don't care if an actor is gay, straight or in between. 75% of respondents to the poll said that knowing an actor's sexual orientation would not change their opinion of him, her, or their show.

Almost half of people agreed that television played the most important role in creating perceptions of gays. Religion followed in second place at 34%.

Only 10% think there should be more gay characters on television. But 90% did NOT say they want less. This is where statistics make us dizzy.

'Cause why doesn't everyone want more gays on TV? We're the best!

Ren: It's nice to know that we can always depend on hearing a rant from someone that can not draft a complete sentence.

It's very hard for me to understand Iren's statement. Grammar is extremely important when you're wanting to get a point across, Mr. Smith. I have to admit that I was one of those that were suprised to learn about Neil Patrick Harris. The difference is, I forgot about it in a few seconds. It doesn't make a star less of a star, or anyone else less of a human. It is just who they are...why is that so difficult for people to understand?

Cliff W. wrote:

I found Iren Smith's comments very funny. I'm not even sure if "Iren" is a man or woman. It could be a misspelling of Irene! Can you imagine actually misspelling your own name?
I wasn't surprised by Neil Patrick Harris. In fact, it was Mr. Harris who helped me "come out" to my friends and family. I've been a big fan of his for years. He's a very talented performer.
Look, we're not the enemy. We just want to live our lives like everyone else. I think we should have the right to do that. Is that so awful?

To Ren: It would take an total and complete a**hole to say something as stupid as that. People are who they are. That's being a total racist!!! If you don't approve of the way they live their lives why are you on this website sending blogs??? It's bad enough that they have to put up with that BULLS**T in their everyday lives they don't need it from you. Go somewhere you feel more comfortable. OW' and learn how to spell!!!

David wrote:

REN..it's obvious you don't have any idea what you are saying. You are not educated at all, that's obvious from your spelling and grammar.

Stay out of the conversation. You're not qualified to comment.

Lisa wrote:

I absolutely agree. Viewers in general do not care about the sexual orientation of the actor they are watching. The only ones that care are the same as we encounter in everyday life - the petty ones. They are not worth worrying about anyway. Gay or straight, it should be about how you treat your fellow man not what you do in the privacy of your bedroom.

ken dayton wrote:

I have to agree, grammer is everything. I think Rens problem is, he spent to much time in the bathroom during high school being curious of his own sexuality, like other people its ok to come out Ren we wont bother you. i still think you didnt spend enough time in english class because your grammer would be better LOL. We are going into 2007 and were everywhere. I think its great actors are coming out, the only reason they didnt come out before is because of people like you, so i hope more and more come out just to make you mad. that would make my day.

Aaron, you are truly an enigma. You appear to contradict yourself regularly. Do you even realize it?

You once said you didn't mean anything personal against FoaCCWNSNBM (Fans of a Certain Celebrity Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned), and then days later you insulted them in ernest, and now you seem to go against the PC agenda and state that gay people can (and even imply - should) be defined by their sexuality. Yet if the same were to come from a 'straight' person you, I am certain, would be one of the first to jump on the outraged-bandwagon and slam to the wall such comments as you have made. And incase you are in any doubt - "Cause why doesn't everyone want more gays on TV? We're the best!"

A trifle hypocritical, don't you think?

I hold no harsh feelings for you when I point this out, I only wish to draw attention to what I see as one of the primary 'roundabouts' of pro and anti same-sex understanding and acceptence. The argument of being just as good as anyone else loses its gravity somewhat when you make such overly zealous statements.

Having said that (and to show that I point this out under the guise of trying to be semi-enlightening given my own narrow existance), I also understand the minorities need to blow their own horn. I merely find it fascinating that our insecurities make it necessary for us to keep circling the said 'roundabout'. Its extraordinarily frustrating and yet inevitable in the realms of human nature.

Eh, this is too deep even for me...

HEATHER: THANKS FOR WRITING. I THINK YOU'RE RESPONDING TO TWO DIFFERENT POSTS. THE FIRST ONE BEING ABOUT HOW THE OUTZONE POLL SHOWED THAT TV WATCHERS IN GENERAL DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT AN ACTOR'S SEXUAL ORIENTATION. I THINK WE ALL AGREE THIS IS A GOOD THING. I, YES, I DID END WITH A VERY FLIP COMMENT THAT IS RATHER MEANINGLESS BUT WAS MEANT AS A JOKE. "Cause why doesn't everyone want more gays on TV? We're the best!" OF COURSE WE'RE NO BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. I THOUGHT THAT STATEMENT WAS SO OUTRAGEOUS AN EXAGERATION THAT IT WOULD BE FUNNY. THIS IS WHEN I THINK THE INTERNET NEEDS SOUND EFFECTS SO THAT YOU COULD HEAR A RECORDED LAUGH TRACK OR SNORT AFTER READING THAT SENTENCE.

SECOND, AND PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANTLY: I THINK YOU WERE COMMENTING ON THE NOTE THAT OUTZONE READERS VOTED IN THE "GAY CELEBRITY" CATEGORY" TWICE AS OFTEN AS EITHER OF THE OTHER CATEGORIES. THERE I SAID "SEXUALITY", BUT WHAT I REALLY SHOULD HAVE SAID WAS "SEXINESS". THIS WAS AN ENTERTAINMENT-ONLY SECTION OF THE SITE AND HAD TO DO WITH TERRIBLY SHALLOW THINGS LIKE BEAUTY. BUT WE TRIED TO BALANCE PHYSICAL BEAUTY WITH INTELLECTUAL BEAUTY (THUS DIRECTOR PEDRO ALMODOVAR). IT'S FUN, MOSTLY. AND THAT, WE THINK AT OUTZONE IS A SIGN OF PROGRESS. GAYS ARE FRONT AND CENTER IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY, AND THAT IS SOMETHING WE WANT TO CELEBRATE. IF WE BUNGLE OUR WORDS, WE APOLOGIZE. BUT REST ASSURED EVERYTHING WE DO IS MEANT TO SUPPORT GAY PEOPLE, ENCOURAGE THEM, AND CELEBRATE THEM IN ALL THEIR WONDERFUL DIVERSITY.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! FROM OUTZONETV.COM

God bless the gay/lesbian community! It makes the world a better place for bisexuals. I am one...we are a WORLD!

I was surprised to find out that Harris is one of our own. It was my understanding that he was a devout Christian. Not that I'm saying the two don't mix, I myself am both, but my image of him was just too far from that.
As for Iren, I do so love to read rants from the uneducated. I'm all for speaking your mind and freedom of speech, but if you are clearly uneducated and have only a message of hate to share, then you should probably keep it to yourself, due to the fact that you will achieve no end other than making yourself look foolish and closeminded. With that said, I do pity you. A life of endorsed prejudice is a unfortunate life indeed. I wish you happiness in your journey of hate.
