Volver, Cruz, The Best in Spain

Not that we aren’t in a relatively pleasant mood this morning after watching Little Miss Sunshine win the Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture. The terribly cute film doesn’t have a chance for Best Picture at the Oscars, so congrats to them for SAG win.

But we are still smarting from the royal dissing “The Academy” gave our main gay cine-icon Pedro Almodovar. The man didn’t get a best screenplay, best picture or best foreign language film nomination. Only Penelope Cruz was nominated for Best Actress, and we know she doesn’t have a chance because Helen Mirren is wining EVERYTHING!

So all the better that at least Spain recognized Volver at the Spanish Oscars. The film won best picture and earned Penelope Cruz the best actress award Sunday at the Goya Awards.

Volver, a romantic supernatural tale of strong women in a small Spanish town, had received 14 nominations, but gothic fairy tale Pan's Labyrinth, directed by Mexico's Guillermo del Toro, won the most awards -- seven including best original screenplay.
