No, not flying queens. But “over” as in tired of it. That’s the thesis of an expose in Variety, and we here at OUTzoneTV.com can only say: Yeah, and so what?
We’ve been sick and tired of the Theater Queen stereotype since we were young gay pups. And we also love the stereotype because it’s true. Gays have pretty good taste (usually) and love live theater, understand the drama behind the drama, and the “reality” behind the “acting”.
But we are not stupid. Broadway has been filled with crap for decades. “Spamalot” anyone?
The other crazy note in the Variety story, which we recommend reading, is that they propose that television is taking the place of theater in the life of gay men.
Well, that’s a stretch because television has been a centerpiece of everyone’s life (not just gays) since the dawn of television. And yes, gays are more prominent on TV than ever before, but “Will & Grace” does not a lavender revolution make.
So the author bemoans the “premature” cancellation of “Little Dog Laughed”, a not-that-funny show about a closet-case actor. Uhm, let’s see. Brokeback Mountain, great but also about closet cases. Angels in America—genius—but about closet cases and AIDS. Same with other so-called Broadway hits, “Love! Valour! Compassion!” and “The History Boys”.
