Nothing against the chorus boys (and girls) who are getting a nice paycheck every week. Nor anything against the folks in the audience who enjoy the show , “Spamalot.” And our man Tony Kushner won a nice award, too.
But we’re glad to see home-theater-hero Stephen Sondheim kick “Spamalot’s” booty at the 2007 Laurence Olivier Awards in London.
A small budget revival of Sondheim's musical ''Sunday in the Park With George'' took a handful of prizes Sunday at the while the Monty Python romp ''Spamalot'' emerged the night's biggest loser.
''Spamalot'' went home empty-handed despite seven nominations, including best new musical, for the prizes that honor the best of the London stage.
''Sunday in the Park'' took five trophies, including outstanding musical production and acting awards for Jenna Russell and Daniel Evans. The show, now bound for Broadway, beat big-budget competition including ''Cabaret,'' ''Evita'' and Andrew Lloyd Webber's revival of ''The Sound of Music.''
Thank god! That “Sound of Music” is the show they used a TV show to cast. (sigh…)
