Dick and Mary Cheney's Photo Split

Dick Cheney has a new grandson. We’re pleased as punch about it. So much so we’d like to see a photo. We’re just suckers for family pictures is all and a picture of the Vice President of the United States, his wife, his daughter, his daughter’s lesbian partner and little Samuel David would make our little gay hearts burst with joy.

Never going to happen.

We stumbled on a great read on Alternet.org by Jennifer Chrisler, the Executive Director of Family Pride, the nation’s only organization dedicated to achieving equality for gay families and their children.

As she points out, Mary Cheney and her partner Heather Poe, who welcomed their first child, Samuel, into the world this week, were not included in the photo distributed to announce the birth of their child.

The man who slow burned with distaste upon the mention during a debate with Jon Edwards in the 2004 elections about his daughter’s well known lesbianism must not have seen the political advantage of sharing a happy family moment with his daughter, her lesbian partner, and their newborn baby for the entire country to see, especially since he enjoys so much support from the bigoted right-wing, anti-gay base.

We don’t want to go on a rant here but … if Dick “Dick” Cheney, who at all turns expresses love for his daughter Mary, can’t buck up and be man enough to show the country that his love for family isn’t restricted by political agendas or sexual preference -- that his new role as a grandfather to 2 new proud gay parents has blown into fabrication any remnants of the bible-thumping, caterwauling posture on gay rights his political party has based entire election strategies on -- if “Dick” can’t or won’t stop waving that caveman bone at the black monolith that is human acceptance like one of those desperate monkey’s at the beginning of 2012: Space Odyssey just for long enough to be a proud father to his daughter then … actually what are we saying? As if we were surprised by any of this. Hypocrites sure do make our jobs easier.
