When Jerry Falwell passed away not too long ago we noticed on how every obituary the show "Teletubbies" was mentioned. There’s one word we’d prefer left off of our epitaph. Of course we all know how the dear old Reverend earned those posthumous references to a kid’s television show but we weren’t prepared for it creating yet another news maelstrom, this time overseas.
Ewa Sowinska, a watchdog spokeswoman for children’s right in Poland, was quoted as saying she would ask psychologists to investigate whether the TV ''Teletubbies'' character Tinky Winky is gay. On Tuesday, she backed away from the comments.
In an interview with a magazine, upon being asked about the claims made (presumably in America) that the purse-carrying character Tinky Winky promoted homosexuality, Sowinska stated ''I noticed that he has a purse, but I didn't realize he's a boy. At first I thought that must be a bother for him. Later I learned that there could be some hidden homosexual undertones.''
Sowinska said she would ask her office's psychologists to look into the allegations ''and judge whether it can be shown on public television and whether the suggested problem really exists.''
Sowinska is a member of the League of Polish Families party, which is militantly anti-gay rights and anti-abortion. The party is a junior member in the coalition government led by Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
