You would think that a religion such as Scientology, so closely attached to Hollywood, wouldn’t have such a problem with us gays but in reality they actually reject gay people -- as well as Brooke Shields, most of the medical profession and Oprah’s couch.
The cultish religion even goes so far as to take the fire and brimstone approach of attempting to cure us of our homosexuality through therapy sessions.
With that said, MSNBC.com gives the scoop on some gay leaders who are protesting an updated version of the movie Hairspray because of John Travolta’s involvement in the cast. Funny, we never went to see Battlefield Earth for the same reason … Travolta.
In this case, however, it has more to do with Travolta’s religion than his acting. John’s role as mom Edna Turnblad -- originally played by drag queen Divine -- has gay leaders up in arms that someone so closely identified with Scientology would be picked to reprise a role beloved by the gay community.
“Travolta, a prominent Scientologist, has no business reprising an iconic gay role, given his (religion’s) stance on gay issues,” said Kevin Naff, managing editor of Washington Blade, a gay-themed news magazine.
“It’s well known that Scientology rejects gays and lesbians as members and even operates reparative therapy clinics to ‘cure’ homosexuality.”
