It ain’t just the tapas anymore in Madrid. For 10 days ending this weekend the city has played host to 2.5 million queers from Spain and other countries as part of the annual Europride celebration.
Earthtimes.org reports that this marks the first time the event is being hosted in a southern European country, making Madrid the gay capital for the intercontinental set.
Despite the country’s stormy past of conservative Catholicism and dictorial rule, Spain now leads as a vanguard for gay rights, becoming the world’s first country to equate same-sex marriage fully with straight marriage. More than 3,300 gay couples have wed since 2005.
The country also allows transsexuals to change names without going under the knife.
Of course it makes perfect sense once you’ve seen the perfect films of Spanish born filmmaker Pedro Almodovar.
The motto for Europride is “Europe now! Equality is possible,” and about 200,000 gays from other countries were expected to attend. Organizers said the total Spanish and foreign participation could reach 2.5 million.
