We always perk up whenever there is news on Irish born singer Sinead O’Connor. She has to be the most fascinating (or puzzling) import singer this side of Bjork. So what news does Sinead have to share with us today?
Is she moving to Saudi Arabia? Perhaps her new album will be recorded to the melody of whales humping? Or even better, maybe Sinead has decided to become a Rastafarian.
Ding!
The 40-year-old singer, and self-proclaimed bisexual, has become a Rastafari even though it is a movement widely held to be anti-gay.
To give some background: Rastafari movement, or Rasta, is a religious movement emerged from Jamaica in the early 1930s. The movement was perhaps most successfully define by the reggae music of Bob Marley and its primary symbols of expression are ganja and dreadlocks … okay, so far so good we must admit. Where they seem to lose us however is with the whole opposition to homosexuality thing -- something they have based on Biblical grounds (never heard that one before).
But little bald, bi Sinead decided to sign up any-who. According to PR-Inside, Sinead says “I suppose what I like about it is that it’s not a religion, it’s a prophetic movement. And yes, I’m aware that it’s anti-gay in a lot of ways. I can deal with that even though I’m a woman who likes shagging birds.”
