Facebook Name Recognition

July 31, 2007

20070731_face_260x220.jpgFacebook is rapidly becoming the preferred social networking site these days so it was unsettling for us to read this story on News.com.com about a Facebook policy banning the use of Gay as a last name on the site.

Then we thought, ‘really?’ ‘Why?’

According to the speculation of News.com.com, the most likely scenario is some kind of data set had been implemented to prevent offensive, unsavory names from being registered. They go on to say it is unlikely that Facebook will continue the practice for fear of a negative backlash.

The Simpsons Gay Trivia

July 30, 2007

20070731_simpson_260x220.jpgTo celebrate the release of the new The Simpsons movie that debuted last week we invite you to join in on some gay trivia about the show. Gay.com has an excellent trivia based game surrounding the mythos of “The Simpsons.”

It’s hard not to be familiar with “Simpsons” lore after all these many years, what with episodes airing in the afternoon, evening, and late night nearly every day of the week. And Springfield has always been a gay friendly kind of place: of course there’s Mr. Burns closeted sidekick Smither and all those guest appearances by gay entertainers like Harvey Fierstein and John Waters.

And Lisa Simpson has to be the most “not out” lesbian cartoon character since Peppermint Patty,

This “Simpsons” talk got us thinking about our favorite character from the show. After much debate it came down to Comic Book Guy and Police Chief Wiggum, with Comic Book Guy taking the crown. Now tell us what you think? Who is your fave “Simpsons” character?

Desperate Gay Husbands

July 30, 2007

20070730_housewives_260x220.jpg

Queerty
reports some new neighbors for the girls on Wisteria Lane -- no, not the San Antonio Spurs. Apparently, “Desperate Housewives” is getting gay neighbors next season.

Series creator Marc Cherry, who is out, confirms that queers will, in fact, attack on the ABC hit soap drama. The gays will move into Alfre Woodard’s old home from last season. Typical Hollywood: they can only keep one minority on the scene at a time.

The new gays will be mixing it up with the character Susan, played by Teri Hatcher.

“We’re going to have the first male desperate housewives. They will move into the old Applewhite house and one of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with Teri Hatcher.”

Bond ... Gay Bond

July 27, 2007

20070727_bond_260x220.jpgWe’ve always felt James Bond wasn’t gay enough. We’re talking about the most sophisticated, debonair, European spy in the world -- of course he’s experimented. Thankfully, for our eyes, Daniel Craig feels the same way.

Hollywoodsnark.com reports how Craig has been trying to convince producers to include a gay sex scene in the forthcoming sequel to Casino Royale. He also confesses to be completely prepared to film full frontal.

On a gay scene for Bond, Craig shares: “Why not? I think in this day and age, fans would have accepted it. I mean, look at Doctor Who -- that has had gay scenes in it and no one blinks an eye.”

Chuck and Larry Finally Get It On

July 26, 2007

20070727_sutra_260x220.jpgThat new Adam Sandler comedy Chuck and Larry finally came out (sort to speak) and it was the usual, less than thrilling, unoriginal, and slightly exploitive frat comedy we’ve come to expect. We really don’t care if straight guys pretend to be gay for a laugh, so long as it’s funny.

How do you make it funny then? The guys making out thing has almost been done to death, finally put to bed by Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen at the MTV Movie Awards this year. Comedy is about commitment. If Sandler, and his co-star Kevin James, really wanted us to laugh they would have gone whole hog into their roles as gay men.

The blog Pretty On The Outside decided to illustrate (perfectly) that concept. Click here to see illustrations with Adam Sandler and Kevin James in full gay action. The site has created Kama Sutra inspired illustrations of comedy’s latest tag team.

My Two Dads

July 25, 2007

20070725_daddy_260x220.jpg

To quote a conversation between Diane Keaton and Woody Allen in his 1979 film Manhattan:

Diane Keaton: “Two mothers are absolutely fine.”
Woody Allen: “Really? Because I always feel very few people survive one mother.”

It would seem that Rupert Everett takes the other side of the coin. It’s two dads that he could do without. In an interview with the British newspaper Daily Express, Rupert expresses some serious reservations about gay parenting.

“Oh God, I could never do that to a child. Can you imagine what it would be like, having your two dads coming to school speech days? And hearing those awful queeny rows while you are trying to get to sleep?”

Tegan and Sara

July 25, 2007

20070725_tegansara_260x220.jpg

You know what we’re suckers for? A rock duo comprised of twin lesbians from Canada. We love that more than a straight guy loves … well, twin lesbian rockers from Canada. That’s probably why we’ve been obsessively listening to the new Tegan and Sara album all week.

Their new album “The Con” was released this week to high acclaim. For those not in the know, Tegan and Sara Quin are out rock sisters from Canada with a power pop sound that alternates between rock and folk. “The Con” is the follow up to their infectious 2004 album “So Jealous.”

We were first acquainted with the band when we saw them open up for Ryan Adams in New York, as part of his 2002 tour Demolition. We’ve been hooked ever since. Tegan and Sara’s new album was co-produced by Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie fame. The tracks ebb and flow from swooning heartbreak to wrenching electric weirdness.

While the music is great, it’s the girls voices that really care the day. They have a quality of charming pessimism perfectly juxtaposed by voices best described as … girlish? These aren’t Riot-Grrrl’s and, refreshingly for out artists, the band is devoid of shtick. It’s heartfelt music and the songs deal with love and relationships in an honest yet universal way.

You can check out their MySpace page for songs from their new album.

We love the ‘Coop. There’s no denying him. But would we like to smell like the ‘Coop? He spends an awful lot of time around natural disasters, Ugandan rebels, and, well, Presidents. We are not necessarily attracted to that scent.

Tom Ford doesn’t care. The gay-bot of fashion has asked Anderson to serve as spokesman for his new line of cologne, according to Janetcharlstonhollywood.com. Despite Tom Ford’s inclinations, Anderson reportedly rejected the offer.

We’re not supposed to get this sad in the middle of summer but what else can we feel now that the season finale of Kathy is upon us. This season in particular has been a blast with Kathy hosting the gay porn awards, entertaining inmates, dining with Joan Rivers, and dating her way off the D-List with the likes of Nick Carter and Ron Jeremy.

There was also some very emotional and touching moments, first and foremost being the passing of Kathy’s father. Through it all, our favorite redhead has managed to keep that trademark wit and sense of humor.

Dude Looks Like A Lawsuit

July 24, 2007

20070725_vestite_260x220.jpg
Steven Tyler has a reality show?

We're only teasing of course. There is, however, a new reality show, this time on FOX. It's called "There's Something About Miriam" and will begin airing Halloween, in accordance with Wiccan law. Either that's the reason or its because Halloween is the one time of year all of straight America wants to look their transsexual best.

The pitch? A group of guys vie for the attention (and affection?) of a pretty young lady, who sorts through the pack to find the one for her. Ho-hum right? Or ... yawn? Well then wake up silly b*@#*es because she's a tranny.

The show is based on a UK version of the shocking series, which aired in 2004, and was followed by a slew of lawsuits. The suits, though, were settled out of court, and went on to show internationally. Because what the world needs now is sexual confusion ... sweet sexual confusion.

Tammy Faye Bakker Messner

July 23, 2007

You’ve lived a rich life when it can be said that you were both a former televangelist as well as gay icon. So it can be said about Tammy Faye Bakker Messner who died on Friday at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer.

Tammy Faye had just made an appearance the night before on CNN’s “Larry King Live” talk show. “I believe when I leave this Earth because I love the Lord, I am going straight to heaven,” she told King in that interview.

Even in her glory days during the PTL Club with then husband Jim Bakker, Tammy Faye was consistently a friend to gays and lesbians. She especially embraced those suffering with HIV. Later still, in the 90’s her campy, colorful persona increased her popularity.

Guerrilla Gay Bar

July 23, 2007

20070723_guerrilla_260x220.jpgA Los Angeles group called the Guerrilla Gay Bar is making a splash in social circles around the LA area by crashing traditionally straight hang out spots and turning them queer … at least for a night.

The New York Times has the article that details the origins of the insurgency (it first surfaced in San Francisco in 2000) and its mission. Guerrilla Gay Bar is not so much about making a political statement as it is opening up some more options in the gay Los Angeles social scene. The club and bar circuit scene in West Hollywood has become so synonymous with gay nightlife that the “ghettoized” scene has become old hat for many long time denizens.

In reaction to that, Guerrillas aims at exposing gays to other social situations mainly frequented by straight people but, by making an event out of it, there is a group dynamic at play, which makes it a more comfortable situation for those who attend.

“There’s a place for gay bars, but we feel gay people have become so segregated that some of them don’t go out into the wider community anymore,” said organizer Matthew Poe. “We want to suggest that the world is bigger than West Hollywood.”

Shemar Moore Doth Protesteth

July 20, 2007

20070720_sharmar_260x220.jpgShemar Moore is not gay! Will you all just freaking relax? He is sooo not gay. And a little wet romp in the ocean off of a gay nude beach does not a gay boy make. Isn’t that right Queerty? Besides he was with two chicks at the time. It’s not his fault they totally got cropped out of the picture … is it? Well, don’t take our word for it. Just read the latest In Touch magazine:

“People find it interesting to try and make me gay,” says Shemar. “I’m not gay. I went on vacation with two girlfriends of mine who, interestingly enough got cut out of the picture. We found a nude beach, as far as I know, was a unisex beach … We took off our clothes and jumped in the water. I’ve been trying to skinny dip since I was a teenager. I’m just grateful that the water was warm!”

The beach in question was located in Hawaii. The pictures were snapped by a National Enquirer photog and subsequently landed all over the internet.

We think we know what happened here. Shemar was in Hawaii and took in a Prince concert. And Prince was probably all like, “Come and ride my motorcycle Shemar.” Shemar was probably, “I got two awesome chicks Prince. What about them?” Then Prince says, “That’s okay. But I guess you don’t want to host my new game show on the LOGO network.”

Lesbians Slow Burn While Gays Flame On

July 20, 2007

The doctors interviewed 38 couples from the UK and asked them to complete questionnaires.

“Same sex relationships are seen as devoid of gender and gendered power relations, however, lesbian and gay male couples' accounts of, and approaches to, their own civil partnerships demonstrated the implicit gendered nature of civil partnerships," they conclude.

Bionic Lesbian

July 19, 2007

20070719_sackhoff_220x260.jpg
We’d like to begin this story by saying we had no clue that Starbuck from “Battlestar Galactica” was cast in the new NBC show “Bionic Woman.” The actress Katee Sackhoff, who made her name on the Sci-Fi show, now in its final year, has turned into somewhat of a lesbian icon, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With that in mind, how might she react upon the news that former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington had been cast to join “Bionic?”

Courtesy of Popnography.com:

Sackhoff has become a lesbian icon because of her character Capt. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on "Battlestar," and her no-show [at a panel promoting Bionic Woman] raised speculation that she might be boycotting "Bionic" in light of Monday's announcement that Isaiah Washington, fired from "Grey's Anatomy" for reportedly using an anti-gay slur, is joining the new NBC series.

Chemistry.com vs. eHarmony

We were all over the story last month about Internet dating site eHarmony.com and the less-than gay friendly practices they employ. So we were quite interested today in the PinkNews.co.uk article about a rival site called Chemistry.com.

The new website welcome those who were rejected from the eHarmony dating service because they are gay. The eHarmony founder has previously stated that his site is about marriage and that the eHarmony “matching technology” was derived from studies of straight married couples and as gay marriage is illegal, in his words, he is not interested in their business.

This is where free markets, open economic democracy, blah, blah, blah really seems cool and ideal. Along comes Chemistry.com with a new ad campaign targeted at the large gap in the market eHarmony’s business practices have afforded.

Outfest Red Carpet Madness

July 19, 2007

20070719_outfest_redcarpet3_260x220.jpg
As we've been spinning through various Outfest events this week, we've hardly had time to stop and breathe, but we definitely wanted to share some of the amazing and talented people we interviewed at the Bravo party over the weekend. It was a huge hit, in honor of Tim Gunn's still-to-come "Guide to Style" reality show (premeiring September 6th).

We breifly spoke to Reichen, as well as our own super-adorable William Sledd, who actually got into kind of a bitch fight with Perez Hilton. (But more on that later in the week…)

You can check out interviews with some of our various "Bravo-lebrities" including Robert Best, the cast of "Flipping Out" and several "Top Chef" contestants including this interview with Marisa -- (it turns out the party was at Boulevard3 in LA -- which is connected to "Social" -- the same restaurant where she was told to pack her knives...ye-ouch.)

We also gave fans at the party a chance to work it auf in front of the camera in their very own photoshoot with their favorite Bravo personalities, like Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn! Well, when we say “take pictures with” that shouldn’t be read too literally. They were there … and so were some lifelike cutouts of them.

If you find yourself in the Los Angeles area please be sure to check out the latest events from Outfest 2007 and we will be delivering up-to-the-minutes reports covering the galas, award ceremonies and stars. The film festival lasts until July 23rd.

Gay Comedy Rip Off?

July 18, 2007

20070718_sandler_260x220.jpg
Remember all those movies where a kid and an adult accidentally switch bodies? Judge Reinhold had one. So did Tom Hanks, and even Susan Sarandon. Is it possible we’re seeing the same trend develop within the homo-erotic/homophobic Hollywood comedy genre?

Our gay blog crush Towerload has the scoop on a 2004 Australian comedy called Strange Bedfellows, the highest-grossing film in Oz that year. The film was about a straight cinema owner and a mechanic who fain homosexuality to claim a financial benefit. That film’s director, Dean Murphy, is concerned that his movie’s plot is a little too similar to the storyline of the new Adam Sandler comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

In Chuck & Larry Adam Sandler and Kevin James are firefighters who act gay so that they can claim domestic partnership benefits from New York city.

Who's the Boss?

July 17, 2007

20070717_katie_260x220.jpg

We’re not going to say stories of stars being turned away at the door of this or that event makes us smile, but this one is an exception.

Over the weekend, Katie Holmes showed up at the Hugo Boss after party in Berlin, but was rumored to have been denied entry. Was it because she brought an underaged Baby Suri with her? Do they even card in Germany? Could it have anything to do with her husband, we wonder? Maybe it has something to do with the religion he’s the poster child for, which we hear isn’t so hot in Germany?

Maybe Berlin’s fashion scene isn’t that far removed from its film scene, which temporarily forbade Katie’s hubby from shooting a World War II film there (they’ve since been granted permission, and were quick to point out that Scientology had nothing to do with their barring him in the first place)? Or maybe, Germans just aren’t that into aliens.

Either way, it probably wasn’t much of a loss for our dear Katie. It’s been a while since any of us have been to Berlin, but we’re still recovering from that German techno.

“I am not sure what I am going to do for my next film, but I certainly believe that I have no right to tell another couple whether they can or cannot be married. That is simply not allowed in my ethical book of standards.”

Armistead Maupin's Blind Item

Openly gay author Armistead Maupin is best known for his series of books “Tales of the City.” In his 6-book series set in San Francisco Maupin was on the vanguard of addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the realm literature. In other words, he has proven to be a rather insightful intellectual.

That is why we were particularly intrigued by his quote on Scientology during a book signing at the Bloomsbury in London last week when asked a question during his Q&A session with the audience. The question posed was “do you get angry about the closeted gay actors in Hollywood?”

“...of course the Church of Scientology comes in very handy. (huge laugh from audience) It's the biggest ex gay movement in America. They catch you when you're young and confused, tell you they'll look after you, even provide you with a wife and child... Then of course you have to do what they call an audit, where you confess everything you've ever done into a tape recorder, so they've got the tapes. So once you're famous and successful you have to go along with all their nonsense about people falling into volcanoes... (pause)... then you play a woman in a movie musical, a part created by a drag queen and written by a gay man..."

Outfest Opening Night!

July 13, 2007

20070713_outfest_260x220.jpg
It takes a lot for any of us to feel star struck. But reading over the collected OUTzone staff text messages we sent each other during last night's opening of the 25th Annual Outfest -- we might actually be gay nerds.

A sampling:

"OMG, Judith Light hugging Tori Spelling!"
"What do we think of the Perez Hilton orange hair?"
"Theodore Leaf looks like my (hot) imaginary boyfriend. Should I mention?"
"Cast of 'Queer as Folk' is here. Someone pounce."
"The LA gays don't wear nearly as much black as NY gays ... thoughts?"

20070713_light_260x220.jpg

The festival kicked off with a screening of Save Me -- starring Chad Allen, Robert Gant and the unbelievable Judith Light. And we're going to ask this now -- where the hell have they been hiding Judith Light all these years? Her performance in the movie is the stuff that, no kidding, Academy Awards are made of. But the best part of the evening came with the introductions.

A federal court of appeals ruled against the man, starved for attention, stating in court documents that he had no legal right to the objection.

Michael McDermott, the man who put forth the appeal, is a California lawyer who claims that the name for the lesbian riding club is “disparaging to men and is scandalous and immoral.”

Morrissey Gets Snarky

July 12, 2007

20070712_morrissey_260X220.jpg

It is well known (if he can still be considered “well known”) that Morrissey is an eco-friendly chap. In fact, he was environmentally aware before any of us had ever heard of a vegan. Anti-fur, anti-animal cruelty… you name it, Morrissey is it.

But fans at his concert in Norfolk, Virginia got an earful last night, and it wasn’t just some old “Smiths” songs. Lashing out at one of our faves, Morrissey tore into Madonna, her fur-loving ways, and her adoption of an African child.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if she made that African boy into a coat and wore him… for 15 minutes, and then threw it away.”

Um…. Wow.

We admit that adopting African children was (and still is?) in vogue in a weird way, but jeez, Morrissey, I’m sure young David isn’t in any danger. We know you’re just trying to make a point about fur (or: we hope you’re just trying to make a point about fur), but leave the adopted children out of it. Please!

Maybe Morrissey is just jealous. After seeing her rock over the weekend at Live Earth, it’s hard to imagine there’s anyone that doesn’t wish they could tear it up onstage like her.

20070711_cary_260x220.jpgThe opening night gala at the Orpheum Theatre kicks off the 25th Anniversary with the feature film Save Me from director Robert Cary. The cast includes Outfest regular Judith Light and openly gay actors Chad Allen and Robert Grant.

20070711_condon_260x220.jpgAlso on Thursday Outfest honors Academy Award winning screenwriter and director Bill Condon, who will receive the 11th Annual Outfest Achievement Award prior to the screening for Save Me. Billy Condon won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film Gods and Monsters starring Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser, a movie for which he also directed. He followed up that effort by adapting the hit film Chicago from stage to screen. His latest effort was for the 2006 Oscar nominated film Dreamgirls starring Jennifer Hudson, Jaime Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy.

Blondie Desperately Seeks Susan

July 11, 2007

20070712_blondie_260X220.jpg
What was more gay-fab during the post-punk movement than Blondie? Nothing we say, unless you count the movie Desperately Seeking Susan. And there is absolutely nothing more gay-fab than a Madonna movie -- a Madonna anything. Except maybe a musical.

So hold on to your britches as we announce that Blondie will be lending songs to a West End musical based on the Madonna movie Desperately Seeking Susan. Producers announced Tuesday that the show will feature Blondie’s songs “Heart of Glass,” “Atomic,” “One Way or Another,” “Dreaming,” and “The Tide Is High,” as well as new compositions by Debbie Harry.

Harry said she hoped the show would eventually transfer to Broadway.

Reverend Tori Spelling

July 11, 2007

20070711_tori_260x220.jpg
It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard from “Beverly Hills 90210” star Tori Spelling. We know she was pregnant and married but that’s about it … oh, and she wasn’t really a virgin.

Turns out that the 34-year-old actress has a reality series on the Oxygen network (we had no idea). The show is called “Tori & Dean: Inn Love.” If you’re wondering who Dean is -- it’s her husband, Dean McDermott and, as far as we know, there’s no relation to Dylan. The shows premise is a bit “Newhart” inspired, where the couple runs Chateau La Rue, a bed-and-breakfast in Fallbrook, CA.

Here’s where us gays fit in: Tori got her self an online, official certificate making her a Reverend of all things and, like any good Reverend, Tori decided to preside over a same-sex union. Yea for Tori!

The Roboho Controversy

July 10, 2007

20070710_beyonce_260x220.jpgFresh off their “Entourage” shout out last weekend (you know, where a transsexual accidentally flashed her testicles to glaring TMZ cameras) the gossip blog now finds itself in the middle of a Beyonce, Al Sharpton sandwich.

Two weeks ago TMZ published a fashion bit covering the BET Awards which, among other beauts, included a summary of Beyonce’s on stage ensemble as “roboho.” At the time we were mainly concerned with the assertion that her outfit was a rip off of a Kylie Minogue performance stunt a while back. That all changed when Rev. Al took objection to TMZ’s “ho” language and comparisons to street walkers:

“Calling any woman a ‘ho’ is demeaning and abusive and it should not be tolerated on any level. It is intolerable to think that TMZ.com would find humor in calling Beyonce -- someone who symbolizes the strength, dignity and uplifting of Black women -- a “Roboho,” and they should be denounced by the entire community for glorifying the continued oppression of women with this derogatory term.”

The First Ever Presidential Gay Debate

July 10, 2007

20070710_debate_260x220.jpgSomeone, somewhere has decided to actually inject a little life into political discourse … thank heavens. For the first time ever, major Presidential candidates will be taking part in a televised debate devoted to LGBT issues.

According to 365Gay.com, the one-hour event will be held on August 9 and be broadcast on LOGO, including a live stream on LOGOonline.com. All the heavyweights are expected at participate, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards (whose wife will surely be in attendance).

The panel is expected to pull no punches, diving heavily into issues such as marriage equality, HIV/AIDS prevention, hate crimes and the military. The debate was organized by LOGO and the Human Rights Campaign.

O'Reilly Heavy on the Lesbians

July 10, 2007

20070710_oreilly_260x220.jpg
Maybe we should start referring to the “No Spin Zone” as the “Absent Facts Area.” After Fox News and “O’Reilly Factor” legal correspondent Rod Wheeler apologized for inflating the number of lesbian gangs that exist in the Washington D.C. area as part of a discussion about … well, lesbian street gangs, now O’Reilly himself has kinda sorta done the same thing.

As told to us by the site Newshound, on his program, O’Reilly admitted to the story being “overstated” in one breathe to a spokeswoman for GLAAD but then in the next continued a justification for the error by pointing out a story on four women in New York convicted of jumping and killing a guy. The spokeswoman, Rashad Robinson, reminded Bill that the four women were not, in fact, a gang but rather four mean women.

The factual errors don’t end there for “The O’Reilly Factor.” The same correspondent Rod Wheeler also misspoke to Bill about a supposed lesbian gang called the Pink Pistols.

The Advocate Anonymous No More

July 09, 2007

20070709_advocate_260x220.jpg
You would think that respected gay publication The Advocate has always been an out and proud magazine but that’s not necessarily the case. The longest running published gay title in the US has always shipped their copies to subscribers in the wrapped-to-conceal paper usually only reserved for pornography.

According to PinkNews.co.uk, Those days are over. While subscribers can still option to receive anonymous copies of the magazine, the majority of the readership did not want the covering included. Publisher of The Advocate, Michael Phelps, elaborates:

“For some, they said they were environmentally conscious and wanted to cut down on waste. For others, it was more of an out-and-proud issue.”

A Man Bag Crime Wave

July 09, 2007

20070709_manbag_260x220.jpg
While metrosexual men have made the playing field all the more confusing for us all the way gay boys, it turns out they put themselves at risk for even more than just an indirect come on from the same sex (or not so indirect depending on our mood).

Fashionista tips us to a new research study that shows a guy with a “murse,” or man purse, is more likely to be mugged. A murse? That is a new one for us in the ever-evolving lexicon of urban slang.

Since this is officially a “scientific” study, there is a reason given behind the findings of the research. You see, while women’s handbags are usually for fashion -- you know, sugar and spice and everything Mac blush -- men’s handbags are normally reserved for more lucrative transport: a camera, a laptop, an iPod and invariably some type of Kiehl’s lotion.

As one might imagine, the mugger assumes the bags contents to be a prize worth grabbing and they pounce on their all too well coiffed victim, wrestling away the murse from them and presumably fencing off an iPod with way too many bootleg Sufjan Stevens songs on it.

Rosie: Live From A Boat

July 06, 2007

20070706_rosie_260x220.jpg
It’s about that time again. Rosie’s Family Pride Cruise time! We are ridiculously gay for cruises and Rosie’s now annual event is easily the most famed of the gay cruises. The cruise was also in the news not so long ago for announcing that they would be rerouting their cruise this year in order to avoid protesters in Bermuda.

That’s not the only change in procedure this year for the cruise. Queerty.com tipped us to the fact that Rosie’s cruise will also be doing live blogging throughout the course of the event.

Lance Bass Using Hairspray

July 06, 2007

20070706_bass_260x220.jpg
John Travolta had the audacity to say in the press this week that Hairspray is not a gay movie. Well John Travolta, consider you and your Scientology buddies as being gay karate chopped to the neck … by Lance Bass.

The poponography blog has the news that Lance will be joining the cast of the musical version of “Hairspray” on Broadway. Who were you expecting? Joey Fatone?

Sex and the City: The Movie

July 05, 2007

20070705_sex_260x220.jpgHas it finally arrived? Ever since “Sex and the City” ended its impressive run on HBO there have been rumors of a reunion movie. Those rumors were usually dashed by some report that Kim and Jessica hate each other or Cynthia doesn’t want to return to the character, etc…

But now TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello reports that the Sex and the City movie is indeed a go. We have to say, this does sound like the real thing. It’s being said that Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha and, most importantly, Carrie have all signed contracts to appear in the film.

Fred Thompson and the Gay O.P.

July 05, 2007

20070705_thompson_260x220.jpg
With the Democratic party offering up so much diversity in their Presidential field this election cycle the Republicans will have to go a long way to top the prospect of the nation’s first African-American (Obama), Female (Hillary) or Hispanic (Bill Richardson) president. What else is there that could astound and defy popular logic as to what a President should be or look like? What else, what else…

Fred Thompson is gay!

Okay, not really. In fact, not at all we suspect. But we’re not Andrew Sullivan. Andrew’s comments in his online column for Atlantic Monthly have sparked some internet rumors that Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson has some kind of gay past.

Unisexual Confusion

July 03, 2007

20070703_bath_260x220.jpg
A woman was kicked out of a West Village restaurant in New York for being a butch lesbian. Let me repeat that: A West Village restaurant in New York.

The establishment in question is the Mexican restaurant Caliente Cab Company, which is described by the AP has a “popular restaurant in Manhattan.” Not to come across as complete New York snobs but this joint ain’t the tops people. There is a giant sombrero sticking out the front of the building for one thing and who wouldn’t want to be at Sushi Samba, just down the road, for the other.

Anyway, Khadijah Farmer, 27, said the incident occurred on June 24th when she had gone to eat with her girlfriend and another friend after the NY Pride Parade.

Frontlines of the Culture War: Conservapedia

July 03, 2007

20070703_conserve_260x220.jpg
We have to credit our obsessive Tivo viewing of “The Daily Show” for this one. Show humorist Lewis Black had a particularly funny segment about Conservapedia, a conservative based version of Wikipedia.

What defines Conservapedia? Well nothing, really. I mean most of the definitions for things are basically the same, perhaps with a slight right winged edge to them. But the true dividing line between “normal” Wikipedia and Conservapedia is when you run a search for “gay.”

The Conservapedia definition for homosexuality is thus:

Spice Girls Feud?

July 02, 2007

20070702_spice_260x220.jpg
It was a matter of an egg timer between when The Spice Girls officially announced a reunion and the first reports of in fighting surfaced. Yeah sure the girls played nice at first even celebrating the reunion with gifts like the band mate rings Geri Halliwell offered up but according to News of the World things have become decidedly more agitated since then. Here’s the rundown:

Posh is sick of Geri hogging the limelight which is sort of ironic since … well, you know it’s Posh.

Scary is giving the rest of the girls a glimpse of what Eddie Murphy must have seen with her reportedly weird behavior and crappy track of time.

Ginger -- to Posh’s great regret -- is using the reunion as her personal victory tour. Think Bobby Brown during that New Edition reunion debacle.

Sporty demands solitary confinement prior to interviews, asking that no one speak to her beforehand.

And Baby isn’t supporting any one of them. We’ve always suspected Baby was the most normal of the group and so this just may be a sane person distancing herself from the crazies.

Jodi Foster's Philanthropy

July 02, 2007

20070702_foster_260x220.jpg
Jodie Foster has given back and in a big way. The Academy Award winning actress made a huge donation to The Trevor Helpline, America’s only existing 24-hour suicide prevention helpline for gay and lesbian youth.

The Trevor Project, a Los Angeles based non-profit, launched a fund raiser for the helpline to help financially support the two call centers now actively at work.

Calls placed to the helpline are free of charge, completely private and handled by trained counselors. The helpline receives thousands of calls each year from gay and questioning youth.

The exact amount of Jodie’s donation has not been revealed but it is thought to be considerable. The goal of The Trevor Project campaign was to raise $1,000,000 in multi-year gifts, according to Pink News in the UK.
