What was more gay-fab during the post-punk movement than Blondie? Nothing we say, unless you count the movie Desperately Seeking Susan. And there is absolutely nothing more gay-fab than a Madonna movie -- a Madonna anything. Except maybe a musical.
So hold on to your britches as we announce that Blondie will be lending songs to a West End musical based on the Madonna movie Desperately Seeking Susan. Producers announced Tuesday that the show will feature Blondie’s songs “Heart of Glass,” “Atomic,” “One Way or Another,” “Dreaming,” and “The Tide Is High,” as well as new compositions by Debbie Harry.
Harry said she hoped the show would eventually transfer to Broadway.
''It's a live show so it is going to be different to the film, probably more lighthearted,'' she said.
The current UK edition was, of course, adapted from the 1985 film that propelled our Material Girl to film fame. The musical is scheduled to open on Oct. 12th at the Novello Theatre. Why does London get all the cool musicals first? Meanwhile, we get Clay Aiken.
Producer Susan Gallin said the stage show would stick closely to the plot of the film.
''The story is universal. It's a quirky, offbeat movie about women who change their lives and end up with the lives that they were meant to have,'' she said.
