Facebook Name Recognition

20070731_face_260x220.jpgFacebook is rapidly becoming the preferred social networking site these days so it was unsettling for us to read this story on News.com.com about a Facebook policy banning the use of Gay as a last name on the site.

Then we thought, ‘really?’ ‘Why?’

According to the speculation of News.com.com, the most likely scenario is some kind of data set had been implemented to prevent offensive, unsavory names from being registered. They go on to say it is unlikely that Facebook will continue the practice for fear of a negative backlash.

Negative backlash like, “You’re allowed to be Hitler, but don’t even try being Gay on social networking site Facebook,” as one online hub quipped.

Facebook does allow members to list on profiles their preference for men, women, both, or neither (for Morrisey we guess) , so it would appear this is not a case of eHarmony-phobia.
