With the Democratic party offering up so much diversity in their Presidential field this election cycle the Republicans will have to go a long way to top the prospect of the nation’s first African-American (Obama), Female (Hillary) or Hispanic (Bill Richardson) president. What else is there that could astound and defy popular logic as to what a President should be or look like? What else, what else…

Fred Thompson is gay!

Okay, not really. In fact, not at all we suspect. But we’re not Andrew Sullivan. Andrew’s comments in his online column for Atlantic Monthly have sparked some internet rumors that Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson has some kind of gay past.

According to Sullivan: "Outside the extremist, activist base, regular GOP voters turn out to be relatively tolerant when it comes to sexual minorities and private sex lives. They’re not well represented by their party leaders, as far as policy is concerned. This is good news for Fred Thompson. The man has had a colorful and wide-ranging sex life, as I’m sure we will soon find out."

Sakes alive! What would Conservapedia say?

We aren’t sold on this and neither is Wonkette but we still love the idea of such a scandal and its potential ramifications (and we’d still be voting for Obama). Still, don’t completely rule it out that Thompson has some stud run-ins in his past. According to his rather Onion-esque online “private journal” he’s a really big Barbara Streisand fan as well.
