A Lesbian By Any Other Name...

April 30, 2008

lesbos-320x240.jpgThe Times Online has a short but sweet article about the frustration of certain residents of the Greek island Lesvos. They are Lesbians, but obviously not all lesbians (see the difference in the capitalization of the first letter?) and are suing the Greek Gay and Lesbian Union to reclaim the title. Evangelia Vlami of the organization calls the effort ludicrous because the term has been in use for hundreds of years to describe gay women. But Dimitris Lambrou who is suing, doesn't see it that way, “We are suffering psychological and moral rape." An extreme statement, in any context. But it must be hard to be on that side of a utterly lost battle. We're picturing that next, a legion of old-school happy people will march to reclaim the word gay.

Cher and Tom Cruise?

April 30, 2008

cher-320x240.jpgThis is just too bizarre, no? Cher supposedly told Oprah (in a yet to be aired interview) about a "long date" she had with Tom Cruise in the 80's and how she was so crazy about him. She said, "He was so wonderful ... And he was so, like, different." Hmmm...

For some reason we just cannot imagine, for the life of us, Tom Cruise and Cher on a date. It is just too weird. Heck, we can't even imagine them on a date together. What do you think their height difference is? For that matter, we cannot even imagine them in a movie together. You can read what People says about it, but to us this isn't a real life version of The Graduate, it's more like Sunset Boulevard.

Tegan and Sara: They're Funny Too!

April 28, 2008

tegan-and-sara.jpgThe AP reports on Tegan and Sara's witty banter, even going so far as to call them "indie music's answer to Laurel and Hardy". This is awesome. And we thought they were just hot, gay, twin musicians. But, nope. Also comic geniuses.

Speaking of them, though, we really like their new album "The Con" and we do appreciate witty banter between songs to break up all the swaying and shoe-gazing. They just played Coachella, but if you missed that, don't forget they're in the True Colors lineup for this summer. Yeah gays!

Ms. Jackson On Drag, Being a Top And Other Gay Things

April 22, 2008

Japan-Janet-Jackson.jpgSeriously, we all know who the coolest, hottest Jackson is. And so does GLAAD, who’s giving her a Vanguard award. That’s right, it’s our Janet. E! has an interview with her where they ask the gayest questions possible and she gives excellent off the cuff answers like this one about drag versions of herself:

“They really study you. They truly study you. But you know, they pour it on more, which I absolutely love. They give more than I do and I love that. The first time I went to the Baton in Chicago and saw this show, I was with some of my [female] dancers. Afterward, I said to my dancers, "We've gotta pull up because these bitches are hitting it. They're giving so much femininity and we look like boys onstage." The next night we had a show and we were trying our hardest to ooze with that feminine touch.”

And even better this one about her boyfriend:

“It's so funny because I joke with him that it drives me crazy to be a girl sometimes, so in my next life I'm going to come back as a guy and [he's] going to be my bitch.”

She’s such a top. She even has a bulldog. Maybe that’s why we like her so much. She also loves Ellen, has a girlcrush on Alicia Keys and wants to be in a musical. Swoon.

Awesome Ditto Interview

April 16, 2008

bethditto-320x240.jpgSeriously, we can never get enough of Beth Ditto. You drink all that champagne, Beth, you deserve it for being such a badass. Gossip has a new live album coming out and the AV Club interviewed her and she of course had some choice words.

When asked if they felt pigeonholed as a gay band, she said, “I don't really care. I could give a shit… If you want to look at it like that, all music is pretty fucking gay. [Laughs.] I mean especially dance music or punk music, it's all so gay. So I don't feel pigeonholed, I feel like we're right at home.”

She also calls Isaac Brock a dickhead and of course gets in some feminist commentary on the media. Why is she so awesome?

Gay Plays Gay

April 15, 2008

macfarlane320x240.jpgLuke MacFarlane aka Scotty on “Brothers and Sisters” came out of the closet via the Canadian Globe and Mail in an interview printed today. So not only is he gay, and playing a gay (who’s about to get married by the way), he’s also a Gaynadian We love Gaynadians. He even talks about his Canadian identity in a great way (substitute gay for Canadian and it still works – oh except the Juilliard thing):

"I was the only Canadian at Juilliard at the time," he says. "When you go somewhere different, you immediately have to determine yourself ... everyone made fun of me because I was like, 'I am Canadian' and it was a way to create my identity through separation, which I think a lot of Canadians do."

Anyhow, yeah for actors coming out, and yeah for gays playing gay, and yeah for Kevin and Scotty getting married on May 11th. Landmark events, we say.

Keener To Play Lesbian FBI Agent

April 08, 2008

ekeener320x240.jpgElizabeth Keener, (aka Dawn Denbo from The L Word) has signed on for a deal with the Here! network for a new drama series which is described (get this!) as a cross between "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Twin Peaks." Does that not sound like the best show ever?

Keener will star in the show, as a lesbian FBI agent sent on an extended undercover assignment in a mysterious small town. Keener's character juggles personal demons with the demands of her investigation and soon finds herself increasingly enmeshed in the lives of the town's inhabitants. Keener will also apparently have a hand in developing the show.

We've already railed on this season of The L Word, but what did you think about Keener's character (Denbo) on the show? Over the top? The funniest thing on the show this season?

New Bloods Gotta New Album

April 07, 2008

new-bloods320x240.gifWe saw this awesome Portland trio at Gaybigaygay just a few weeks ago and they just hacked us into tiny pieces. Osa plays violin, Adee plays drums, Cassia plays bass and they all sing. Yep, all of 'em.

Their sound is dark and dancey and rapturous and poignant. (Probably none of you are brides to be, but this album is all at once something new, something old, something borrowed and something blue.) They give you a chill up the spine, while simultaneously leaving you no choice but to follow the beat with your head and feet. And they have a full length album, The Secret Life, coming out tomorrow via Kill Rock Stars. In the meantime (or if for some reason you don't trust us) you can listen to a handful of songs on their Myspace page. And check out their tour dates for April and May. Go forth and listen.

Gmail Solves Time Travel Paradox

April 01, 2008

computer320x240.jpgGot Gmail? Never regret not having sent an email on time again! Resumes, happy birthdays, any old thing. From the Gmail website: "Just click "Set custom time" from the Compose view. Any email you send to the past appears in the proper chronological order in your recipient's inbox. You can opt for it to show up read or unread by selecting the appropriate option." This will be perfect for when you wish you had broken up with someone like three months ago.

If only this weren't an April Fools Day joke...
