Del Martin, 87, recently in the news for being one half of the first lesbian couples to marry in June in California, died Wednesday morning. Her wife, Phyllis Lyon, was by her side. They had been together for 55 years. They co-founded The Daughters of Bilitis in the stodgy 1950's initially as an alternative to the bar scene and it eventually became the first, national, lesbian rights organization. They also published The Ladder, the first national publication aimed at lesbians.
The two were true trailblazers for us and just pretty amazing people. Listening to this interview with them on NPR and you'll see what we mean. They talk about butch femme roles and how they didn't fit into them. Del calls herself a sissy butch! Just like us!
