This week is the American Library Association's Banned Books Week. Basically this means that the ALA is trying to call attention to restrictions on access and freedom of reading material. Check out this list of frequently banned and challenged books for some ideas on what you should be reading and fighting to protect the right of others' to read.
You won't be surprised to find out that many times a book is challenged for reasons of "homosexuality". For instance, this amazing children's books based on a true story about two male penguins that hatch an egg together, "And Tango Makes Three", is on the list. You'll actually recognize lots of books on the list, though, as some of your favorites. “The Golden Compass” by Philip Pullman and “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker are a couple of ours that make the list.
So read a banned book, write a letter to the editor or look here for other ways to fight censorship, at least this week.
