Well Out thinks they've figured it out, thanks to a handy formula of polling gay musicians, writers, critics and celebrities on their favorite albums. The result is a not entirely surprising, but quite sturdy and diverse list. You got your Prince, ABBA, Bikini Kill, Magnetic Fields, The Smiths and Morrisey (many times over), Madonna, and the B-52’s. And newer acts like The Gossip and Scissor Sisters. But then you get a few surprises thrown in as well. Most of you probably own two-thirds of this list, but it's a good reference when thinking about what to get your gay niece or nephew.
We were especially pleased to see Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville and Bronski Beat's The Age of Consent at #'s 58 and 59. Kiki and Herb’s Justin Bond said this of the Bronski Beat record, “It was the first overtly political queer album. It saved lives and broke hearts.” We couldn't agree more.
Also we gave up our interest in Sarah Mclachlan many, many years ago, but we thought this quote on why the album was included was astute and funny: “Lesbians all across the world have had sex to this record. A lot of sex.” -- Jen Foster, folk musician.
