How can we not be stoked that Obama won? We are (excluding those Log Cabins), but even for those of us completely uninterested in getting married, we feel the sting of the passing of Proposition 8 in California. In California of all places! It just proves what loads of money spent on fear-based, untruthful, television advertising can do.
But with all their talk of family units and family values, Californians have just disenfranchised not only gays but all the kids raised in alternative families. How many millions of us were raised by single moms (including Barack Obama), grandparents or any other combination of people that constitutes a family? Are we all flawed? Can we not claim a family and family values? We refuse to believe that family has become a dirty word that means intolerance, ignorance and fear.
So we're going to be sad here for a little while. Not because we can't get married, but because a message has been sent to the country that gays are still second-class citizens, perverts and that children must be protected from them. Which is the saddest and most untrue thing we can imagine. We wonder what Ellen will have to say about all of this today.
But congratulations President Obama. We are happy you won.
