It’s sort of what we do, we’ll study an artist and sort of emulate the style. So that huge big blue painting that people see in the background, when Tim is moving quickly away from turtle poop, was actually done by my ten year old, and it’s done with rollers. And it’s house paint. And it’s just applied on that big canvas with rollers. We were looking at Rothkos. I don’t think that’s even his color palette. But I love that people thought that.
There was a sculpture of a pregnant torso in your house -- is that you?
It is. My children often ask me which one of them it is. And I try to avoid all that and I tell them that it represents all pregnancy. And I didn’t do that for all of them. That’s actually a plaster cast and I really do have to take it and get it done, this reminds me, actually. I have to take it and get it cast in bronze. Because you know that thing is going down one day. With these kids. So I should probably bring it back, cast it in bronze and be done with it.
That thing is fun. I would never have remembered how distorting pregnancy really is, unless it was there to remind me. Someone on the internet suggested that it might warp my children. My poor delicate children. They’re probably warped, but not from that. They’re city kids, and I think maybe people don’t understand that.
Right. How old are they when they get to ride the subway by themselves?
This is a question that New York parents grapple with for years -- you know, “When can they go out on their own?” And children in this city tend to ask that at an early age. “Can I run to the deli by myself?” Hell no.
