Project Runway: Santino Talks Smack

andysblog_santino2_320x240.jpgSantino Rice is one of the most talented, popular, and divisive designers in Runway history. Everyone has been on pins and needles waiting for either Barbara Walters or I to nab the exclusive Santino interview about the man's views of runway and the universe. I called him last night around midnight in NYC to see what was up in LA..

WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW?
I'm in a car driving to dinner.

OK SO WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS SEASON SO FAR?
It's not quite as good is it!? Why is that ?! What''s missing!? What's missing, Andy?

UM ... KARA JANX
Yeah... What else? You can have 99 more guesses.

PEOPLE THINK THAT THIS YEAR'S DESIGNERS WERE OVERALL MORE TALENTED THAN YOUR YEAR. DO YOU AGREE?
Definitely -- I wish that the competition would have been as strong on the 2nd season. Hopefully the outcome of the show will enable more real, professional designers to try out for the show in the future. If as a designer on the show you weren't able to see the obvious pecking order, it would make for better work that gets shown. There was still too many people that didn't belong on the show this season as well though. Ones who were on for shits and giggles.

WHO ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
I think that overall the talent pool is way better and more experienced but there's still people that -- I felt like, even someone like Laura who is a talented homemaker, home sewer of sorts, has great taste but at the end of the day is a hobbyist. I don't have time for hobbyists in fashion. She has a great attitude and personality and I like the things she says that get people all up in arms or whatever, but she's still a novelty. Her personality is great, and as a person I'm sure she's lovely. I don't know how old she is -- but I think that if you haven't pursued your dream by the time you're 30, it's likely that you're never going to. This show gives people an inkling of false hope, but I don't think time needs to be spent on those people or that side of the equation. I'm talking about the people that have a long-lost dream of coming out of hibernation to be a fashion star via a fashion reality gameshow.

Why are interviewing this talentless jerk? Don't waste our time with this guy and his stupid designs.

Hello Santino,

I strongly believe you should have won. I also believe that you were auf'd out because of your strong character. I respect you because people with talent and skills in their trade have earn the right to hand out brutal and constructive criticism. As a paralegal [oposite ends of the poles] I too get critical with paralegals "wannabes".

When you were auf'd and did not win on fashion week, I sort of lost faith in the show. I viewed it as dirty politics. Ok, I agree that at times you were too outspoken. However, I ignore the blah blah over the talented and skillful fashion designer that you are. Though I am not a fashion designer, I agree with the sentiment that fashion designers and pattern makers are two different trades. Genuine vs. immitation.

YOU SHOULD HAVE WON.

Have a great life and God Bless.

Wow, just as big a pompus ass as ever, maybe more so. Too bad he doesn't have the talent to back it up - and sad that he never has nor will.
He made Project Runway, not the other way around? Damn! Whatever he's smoking it obviously hallucinatory, producing delusions of grandeur. Go figure the arrogant conceited jerk who confuses his duration on a reality TV show owing solely to its desire to build tension and drama (and they hope ratings) with talent, admires the jerk from this season who's just like him.
But he is right about "The show is in danger of losing it's relevance as it is." but not for using the comparison between Santino and Jeffrey, but for keeping them on so long as a mere plot device.
Yes indeed, Jeffrey is nothing but this seasons Santino. Yet another pretentious ego tripping moron with an over inflated opinion of their own limited ablities.
Another Santino come next season will be the death of Project Runway's relevance - not to mention even more boring than this season!

Wow Santino - when you were on the show you were sexy, but these photos are beyond. Yummy.

Santino,

I think that you are a dynamic personality with many talents and many layers for people who are simply seeking a quick jolt of entertainment to understand or want to understand. I think people are too wrapped up in today's BS two-face culture, you know, smile and pretend to be polite while indirectly destroying another person's character, but when someone tells it like it is, it's considered rude, pompus, pretentious, and why, because you decided to be direct and honest versus the accepted method of indirect deception and sneakiness. Anyway, I guess this really isn't the right forum for this discussion but I just wanted to say that I think you have real talent so keep doing what you do and remember, great artists are often dismissed by their peers but their art is forever praised in history.

santino is a sarcastic bastard. he's much funnier if you don't take what he says too seriously.

come one people. loosen up and laugh! irreverance is such a rare thing. you'll have a heart attack before you're 38 if you take people like santino too seriously.

and say what you will on his character, the fact remains he has some modicum of intelligence.
