My Summer Must-Haves

July 21, 2006

Is everyone having as much difficulty as I am trying to stay cool and fashionable in this deadly heat!? I can seriously barely even function in my daily life in this sweltering pit called New York City -- let alone attempt to reach for new and more progressive heights in my fashion!

And when a creative being such as myself -- and I’m sure a few of you out there as well -- find themselves stifled by uncontrollable conditions we must either fight it or give in to the enemy…

Sooooo…let’s go shopping and alleviate the pressure!

If you’ve read my previous blog, “Accessory Detail,” then you know some of my must-haves for this summer season: skinny ties and a hot pair of sunglasses. Both of which are demonstrated effortlessly by my favorite peeps, Kieran, Mikey and Anna, on a lazy afternoon walking around NYC.

But since I’ve been craving some much-needed fashion fixes worse than a junkie, I thought I’d expand my wish list and also see what some of yours are!

Hi... since we're in winter down here in Chile, I'll share my fav winter clothes... those aviator sunglasses I wear them in every season, there are always a must whenever the sun appears.
For the rain (here it rains a lot in winter) I wear some special boots that are very similar to those converse sneakers, and I wear my jeans under them... with a hoodie with[dunno how to say it] like a fur on the top...
Those are my favourites...
Now I would like to ask you, what would you recommend for me???
I'm a 5'10 tall 19 y/o guy... a fat guy =( 180lbs... light skin, and dark straight hair and dark eyes... remember we're in winter down here... could you tell if I'm dressing properly???
I would love if u answer me.. I'm gonna leave my email just in case: riggerssprit@gmail.com
I love what you do. For me your just the next big designer from the US.
Love and the best luck in everything you need it

For me, it's the belt. I absolutely love all of my belts. Usually, what happens is I buy a cheap belt and then customize it myself. Spraypainting, stiching, pinning, and anything else to make it look funky =)

Hmmm... my favorite things...well besides cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudel, doorbells and sleigh-bells and schnitzel with noodles, I'd have to say I love a lot of what my boy Andrei wears. And some times (I know, I'm bad) I "barrow" his clothes and accesories. Right now I have this cool vintage-esque faded blue shirt that has an bright orange gun with detroit incorporated in it (the "D" is the trigger). I also still have his D&G jacket (it might be fake, but it looks hott). I have an antique faded brown belt that was his fathers and from Romania. But, out of my clothes? I L-O-V-E my white Puma shoes, their comfortable and attractive. I also have an Armani Exchange hoodie that is short sleeve. Hmmm.... so much more clothes, but those are my top few favorites.
So much respect,
Robert

hey, i'm a huge fan. and omg. if you made a collection. oh man.

haha. this summer, i've been wearing a lot of dresses, it seems like dresses are a must, but my favorite is an old slip dress i found in a theatre department. and i just accessorize it with a double wrapped skinny belt with studs, and it just looks amazing.

and also chains, honestly, ones I found out by the toolshed

and I'm notorious for wearing strange earrings, so my latest pair was some fishing lures. They're pink squids.

Keep sewing, keep creating, and keep posting, i'll be a forever fan!

i was wondering about the fit of the clothing on topman.com because i am very picky when it comes to the fit. what are some good stores and websites to find slim fitting clothing? Now, about my summer wardrobe, well lets just say i basically wear the same thing all the time because over here in southern california its like an oven so theres not much one can wear but a t-shirt or jeans/shorts and flip flops (which from what i read east coast ppl hate it when flip flops are worn off the beach). So my basic summer wardrobe consist of my Bdg t-shirts which i bought from urban outfitters in every single color because they were cheap, my true religion becuase it makes my ass look great (i highly recommend true religion jeans, sevens make ur ass flate as a board and i have yet to find another brand) and flip flops. GAWD i can't wait for the cooler season so i can expand my wardrobe.

p.s- topman has some really cheap n cool stuff.

I just have to say somthing : Make sure it's comfortable.
That shirt with all the ruffles may look good when you are trying it on, but think about wearing it for an entire day. Are you going to be ok with wearing it in 85-95 degree weather? If not, maybe you better save it for autumn. People can tell if you're being affected by the heat, and it comes across as unnatractive.
Also, make sure your comfortable with it in your head. If you have a shirt, for example, that shows off your stomach, and you don't necessarily want to show your tummy, don't get it! All day you might be subconsiously (I think I spelled that wrong... X.x) tugging down your shirt. I have seen many people wearing clothes that they are really uncomfortable with. People notice things like that.
Anyway... I just normally go with a t-shirt that I like and a pair of comfy jeans. If it's going to be a cooler night, I just tie a light hoodie around my waist.
...I didn't mean to type that much... :P

seeing as to how singapore is always summer, the best thing would be a thin material vintage tee some light jeans, striking jeans and killer shades. i am looking for really cool shades to finish up my outfit though.

It may be lame, but I'm totally about some cool, not gaudy, belt buckles... I picked up a tape cassette shaped belt buckle from... shocking... Buckle. It got a lot of positive attention so I got a few more unique buckles... then at a Kelly Clarkson concert I saw that she was marketing buckles with her KC logo on them... and Urban Outfitters has one with an LCD screen which you can program to scroll text saying whatever you want it to(which is cool, but a bit much... especially if you're trying to be truly fashionable... here in east tennessee it's hard to think there's such a thing as truly fashionable) but if you are bold enough, like me I guess... there are all sorts of crazy buckles... my friend got me one from her trip to new work with a giant chrome '69'... now I don't know about fashionable... but they don't make you any hotter and they can definitely add personality... gah that was longwinded... apologies

I'm sorry, but i just got to know: the picture you hav on your previous post, with the model on the runway with a painted tie on his chest: that is from the Galliano summer/spring 07, isn't it?

Editors note: Believe it or not, the spray-tan anti-tie is from Moschino's Sprint 2007 runway show.

hmm..first of all im totally unstylish but for all those who want to try that "i dont care what i look like-grungy-hippy" look, i like to wear alot of vintage bandanas. my favorite thing is this bandana my mom gave me from the 60's. its great in the summer if you roll it because it keeps the hair off your face. other than that, i kind of need your help because i always look like i got dressed in the dark. im 5'3" and skinny so if you could gimme ideas on how to look taller without giving up birks and flip flops, it would be much appreciated. :) my email is melmonaghan@patmedia.net ...i know youre busy so if you dont write back ill forgive you.

I live in Texas, so I know what you mean about the sweltering heat. For me, I'm all about the thin, knit shrugs. They add a sassy touch to any tee or top, but are still light enough to not melt in. Love your tips and love YOU more!

Hey Daniel! Remember me? Anyway to answer your question, I love my foam J.Crew flip flops (so comfortable), my "theres-no-place-like-home" red flats (they add such a crazy pop of color to any outfit), and this strand of vintage pearls I recently interited. Can you say score?

Okay ... who is the guy w/ the shaved head? Is that Mikey?? Damn! He is a cutie! Is he single??? :)

OKay, I love my Speedo flip flops. They're black and the most comfortable things I wear in the summer and I wear them everywhere. Thank God they are not ratty and still look new. :)

1) Time and Eyes: Two hours in Nordstrom rack or your local vintage stores is worth it over the alternative of hurridly grabbing the 'must-have' only to find it doesn't suit you, your body shape, your other clothes or your budget. I must have gotten rid of a thousand bags of bad purchases over the years.

2) Giving and Taking: if I love a t-shirt print but the shirt itself is nasty or badly fitting, I buy it along with a plain tee that fits well, then cut out the print and add them together.

DANIEL! Let me start off by saying that I'm in love with you! I know that you're gay and probably frolicking with your cute little boyfriends in Manhatten but I always think I have a chance (because of that episode when you said you were 20% attracted to women). Oh anyways. My favorite summer outfit has been a navy three dot dress with a sparkly tan colored short sleeved cropped cardigan, a pair of aviators (of course)!, a few long gold necklaces, a few turquoise and coral beaded bracelets for originality, and these adorable peep toe metallic calvin klein flats. I think it's cute and funky while still perfect for summer. Tell me, am I doing it right?! P.S. Continue with your collections. Loves it!

my favorite summer outfit? "preppy girl" patchwork madras wraparound skirt with pink grosgrain ribbon as banding at the top to tie into a knot or bow. i wear it with a simple white cami with eyelet lace around the v neck, a simple white sweater (if needed indoors), and simple white kitten heel sandals. accessories: my black d&g sunglasses with rhinestone emblem on the outside and pink on the inside, my pink coach clutch, and sometimes i add a matching pink ribbon in my hair around my half ponytail with my hair curled. its nice and cool for the hot, humid summers we have in florida.

I have one question for you Daniel... Do you have any tips on making short (5'1") girls look taller?

Thanks!

my latest fashion favorites are vans shoes. me, being cursed with my small size 2 and a half feet, i can't find many pairs that fit me. i was looking at a pair of pink and black checked ones. of course the smallest size they had was way too big for me. o well. i just went for a cute pair of black ones with pink penguins on em. i also love those little arm warmer like things. u know, they're like gloves, but there's no fingers in em. my style is totally my own. it's still tasteful, but i just twist things into em to make it look more like me
