Fall Fashion Fix

August 04, 2006

With the temperature breaking the one hundred degree mark more than once this week, my main objective in NYC has simply been to Stay Alive!

Seriously.

For anyone who has had to endure standing in a subway station waiting for a train to come in this stifling heat and stagnant air will attest to the overwhelming urge to simply throw yourself onto the track to end the torture. I realize that may not be the wisest alternative, and instead usually choose to wander through the hundreds of air-conditioned palaces around the city known as RETAIL STORES! (dah dah DAH!)

It still surprises me how soon retailers begin placing fall/winter merchandise on the floor. From Bloomingdales to H&M, the racks of colorful Ts and tanks compete with wool pea coats and winter suiting. This week, while wandering aimlessly through the mish-mosh of summer and winter goods, it got me daydreaming about my favorite season just around the corner. The season that allows you to layer like no other, enjoy the outdoors without either freezing or sweating your butt off, and is always jam-packed with SALES…. I love the fall! Now there is plenty to deal with considering what designers are giving us for Fall 2006, but here are a few of my favorite trends to look for whether you’re doing your shopping at Barney’s … or the local mall.

Glam Rock

Omg wow i can't believe i found this sight! i can't express how much i looovvveeed you on project runway! You totally owned all the way thru and were so nice and unphysco!! Sorry to sound like a total lost cause of a fan but i guess that is what i am. shit i can't even believe i'm talking to you and now i'm swearing..ugh great. Love your blog its so amazing! Personally i like the 3rd picture of the rock glam because its not too much and it sort of doesn't go full out on one look but incorporates different styles which is awesome. i just wanted to thankyou because all your guys work on project runway really inspired me coz i've always loved designing and everything so i have been doing heaps more than usual and enrolled in a fashion design course at high so thanx!

I'll be the first to say that I'm devastated slim is in since I'm... shapely. I don't think muscles have ever been in since the 80's fitness craze which was a disaster... I still look forward to all of my back to school shopping when I get to NYC in a few days... thanks for the tips on style even though the fashion industry doesn't usually cater to football players

Thanks for transporting us all to Fall...even for just a little bit. It's sweltering here in San Francisco too... so you're not alone in your quest for cooler thoughts.

Hi Daniel,

Loved you on Runway, love your designs. Hope everything is going well for you. I miss the cast from you season. I have seen a few people on other shows but the question is "Where's Andre"? I loved the designes you to did together and I just really thought that you all would team up like Dolce and Gabana. You both have an eye for beautiful things.

Keep doing what you do best and MAKE IT WORK!!!

Winter season is my favorite and it is nice to hear designers focus on straight-leg pants. In the 80's that was the thing to do with your pants. It really is stylish especially for the skinny legs out there. I favor belt buckles over rope belts, because they are really stylish and you can customize them with gems or crystals. Just switch out your buckles and you can have an entire new look without buying too many belts. I like the reversible belts for the same reasons. My clothes have to be multi-functional, so I can switch between casual to classy in a moments notice. I hate outfits where you can only get one look..so I'm a fan of reversible jackets or pants that could zip on the side and be straight leg and unzipped turn into palazzo pants. I have yet to find pants like that :(

Excelent recomendations.... and i'm right there with you; fall is my favorite season in regards to what you can wear.
Sadly i live in the hottest city on the planet. Okay, maybe not the hottest, but winters in Phoenix are pretty much non-existant. Atleast they're not what i'm used to.
You can't do much layering and to be honest, you just look ridiculous wearing a peacoat, scarves and gloves while the rest of the city is still running around in t's, shorts and sandals.
I guess us phoenicians will just have to adapt our fall fashion accordingly, right?
Luv Ya!

Hey there,
Alright alright I love your designs they are amazing. I was rooting for you during Project runway.
I love the fall because of the colors of fashion they are so much fun, all the browns and reds..... Anyway, I hate the abggy look for guys and like the more fitted designs. I love to come up with new designs even if I can't create them. I don't have a guy to make the clothing for so generally it's just for me or my mom.
I will totally look out for the new looks.
Thanks for the ideas,
~Elizabeth....x

I loved the second two outfits of glam rock. The last outfit of Nautical/Napoleonic seems a bit...much but the colors are great. The "Slim is in" looks are amazing it's just that living in LA and going to a local high school that admires academics over art and has kids from farther away you won't see this style other than in your dreams. I love to design but I don't have the means and finding wear like that on anyone is a one in a million shot where I live.

Every time I watch your season of Project Runway, I can't help but think about how much you should have your own commercial line. I was drawn to your designs every time. You have a distinct style that is taylored and classic yet up to date. I have even thought about what you should call your new line "DV". I can here it roll off the tongues people everywhere as the designer to wear. Love ya and want to see more of your work.

Hey Daniel. Didn't know you had a blog, and it's actually quite amusing, so kudos!
I'm writing from Colombia (so yeah! you have 'fans' -I don't know if I'm really one- over here too xD!)
Aaanyways, cool blog... don't know if you actually read comments (don't think so), but I guess I have nothing to loose. I really liked all you designs in PR and liked your personality a whole lot (yay for non abvious/diva gays!), but I was kinda sad a few days ago when I read some comments Tim made about you in some magazine -"He's become a Diva, and that's quite unnatractive" (or something like that, you must know xD), he said YOU turned down Michael Kors, and lot of other job offers.
Now, after reading your blog, I feel you're still the same person, you're actually WRITING ONE, taking time, making jokes, etc. I don't know, I just don't feel the santino diva there. Sooo... what do/did you think about Tim's comments? Did you guys talk about it?... I don't know, I know this is a dumb thing to ask, I'm just curious.
Anyways, if you're reading this, thanks.. you can answer in you blog or drop me a line perhaps? I'm on the toher side of the world so you're risk free xD! Bye!

Sarah wrote:

Daniel - I definately feel you on the heat wave. I live in Massachusetts and we got hit with the hot, humid 100 degree weather. My mom actually managed to run 14 miles when it was 100 degrees!
I'd pass out after 5 miles.

Back to the fashion world....
These latest trends you pointed out are things I do see a lot of lately especially the skinny jeans (a pair of which I'm wearing now). I work at the Gap and we're getting more and more fall items in. I sometimes have customers come up to me asking where the shorts are. I just point and say, "clearance." Then you see a barely there rack of clearance items.
I do like mixing summer/fall clothing. Since it got cooler here I've been wearing my Banana Republic white capris with my long-sleeve baby blue/white striped boatneck. This is actually another example of a "nautical" trend outfit and I just wore it 2 days ago!
I also like wearing my capri sweatpants with a tank to bed. Wearing a sweater with a tank top.

LAYERING IS THE BEST! I'm always either freezing or hot especially working in an A/C office and going outside to 80 degree weather. I also have a ton of hoodies/sweaters that I pair up with anything from a blouse to a tank top to a rolling stone T.

Ok I think my passion for fashion is becoming rambling now but I just wanted to say I've been a big fan of your work from day 1 of Project Runway and I hope I get to see more of it in the near future.

Take care.
Your fashionista fan,
Sarah

Dear Daniel: Simply put you are a GREAT guy!! This season of "PR" can never hope to recapture the vibe of the last competition primarily due to you and Santino!! Speaking as an athlete, I was totally caught up in the give and take that you both engaged in! You came across as not only a physically attractive young man...but as a person of substance and phenominal talent!! All the the best to you Dan or should I say Daniel?!! Personally, I like to think of you as Dan...being old enough to be your father, I know that is how I would acknowlege you if you were my son!! Be careful Mr. V...take it from an Ex New Yorker...Brooklyn can be a dangerous place to live!! Sincerely; Bob Foy

braden bacon wrote:

dan! are skinny jeans really in?
i have always hated this trend and would never make or wear them.
its really hard to find a top that looks good in skinny jeans, and it makes your feet look huge, and like one of those bratz dolls .. or whatever those dolls are with gynormous feet.

maybe i'm just jealous that my erm "plus size" legs don't fit into them. haha.

anyway. everything else is great.
fall is my favorite too.
love it.

You were my favorite designer. I can't believe you didn't win. You were simply magnificent. You are extremely creative and intelligent. You are every mothers dream come true! A son who does well in anything he does in a calm manner. I would love to see more of you as the months go by. I can never wear some of the designs that are made due to my hourglass figure that would have been popular a few decades ago- if not a whole other century! In any case, you are the very best! Good luck to you and I hope to read more on your succes that is sure to come. Please keep us all updated.

Hey Daniel -

I think that a really cool place to do some photography for your collections would be the Milwaukee Art Museum. It is a new, uber-modern building with an aesthetic that I think would go well with your designs. Check out their website and click on "The Building." Milwaukee is a little out of the way, I realize, but take a look.
