Can you believe that the third season of Project Runway is almost finished? Wow, how fashionable time flies…. You may have loved it, you may have hated it, but regardless of your personal views on whether or not Jeffrey should be publicly flogged for making a mother cry, or the unnecessary sexual colloquialisms Vincent uses when discussing his … ummm … work, we are most definitely thankful for it. We must put all the drama aside and take a moment to thank the powers that be, for giving us a program that aims to showcase people’s talents, their desires and their dedication for following their dreams. In my eyes, fashion design is one of the most under-rated stimulants a person can encounter; The way a new suit can provide the confidence that you were lacking for that job interview, how a favorite dress can make you feel 10 years younger, or even how those new pair of heels will make you feel like one sexy bitch … well, assuming no one notices that fact that they’re a size 13 and on men’s feet.
All joking and snarky comments aside, the designers of Project Runway should at least be commended for having the courage to wake up one morning and actually agree to the insanity that is PR … all in hopes of making it to the big leagues. For that alone we should be supporting these designers as they finish off the last few weeks of PR3. I am very proud to be one of the Project Runway Alumni, and for at least taking a chance, for having the opportunity to showcase my own ideas and visions to the world. No matter what, no regrets.
So on to the recap: Who has the goods? Who is dead weight? Who has actually shown us solid design and not just drama? Strap on your seatbelts my fashion kiddies, we’re going for a ride -- and I promise it to be even more fabulous than an unsupervised afternoon in Mariah Carey’s closet! Now I’ll warn all of you right off the bat that I’m not going to worry about talking about everyone equally, or making sure that all the designers get equal positive and negative comments -- let’s be real here people, we don’t have time for that and, honestly, I really don’t feel like feeding you a bunch of fluff. My blog. My rules. (Insert maniacal, Malan-esqe laugh here)
So I’m sure I’m like everyone else when I say that I was sad to see Season 2 go, and knew that no matter what, even if the farthest regions of the globe were searched for the more creative designers imaginable, no one would ever be able to replicate the magic and fun that was PR2! (Ok ok… so I’m a little biased, but c’mon, I’m allowed to be!) The one-liners, the laughing, the fashion, the impromptu song-and-dance numbers, the Tim-pressions -- it was almost too good to be true! But, alas, the torch must be passed eventually, and the time given to the new kids to allow them to shine. I have to say that as soon as the commercials began airing for PR3, I immediately fell in love with Allison (obviously, she’s gorgeous) and was definitely intrigued by Laura (she just looked like she had a strong point of view) but other than that a face isn’t a lot to go on.

The first few episodes are always difficult to judge what the designers are really about -- so many people for one, and it’s usually a crazy challenge working with unexpected materials the designers aren’t accustomed to working with. Needless to say that throughout this season I definitely recall flashes of brilliance: Jeffrey’s paint treatment on his “recycle-able” dress, Keith’s modern, fashion-forward design for the Macy’s challenge, or adorable Bradley’s ability to bring his “dog challenge” outfit back from the dead, only to win accolades from Ms. Nina Garcia herself! However, what really caught my attention and turned me around was the “Everyday Woman” Challenge … mostly because I knew my own mother would be jealous she wasn’t able to strut her stuff down the runway like a diva. This was the first time of PR3 that I personally was most surely stumped, and you know I was feeling Robert’s pain when he expressed his loss of vision and inability to begin designing. It’s not that it was impossible by any means, but just a drastic change from what they were used to. Uli’s creation, in my eyes, was the definite winner and made Kayne’s effervescent mother pop like only a designer outfit can!
Oh, and while I’m discussing this episode I have to bring up Vincent’s comment about how: “This is a designer’s job to know how to dress an everyday woman… not everyone is a 6 ft model etc. etc.…” I’m sorry but Uli’s mother was hot. A hot, German FOX in fact, and though it is a designer’s job to take weight, height, color and proportion into consideration when designing a dress, Vincent, and a few others didn’t have the same hurdles to cross that some of the other designers had. I’m all about problem solving … but when you don’t have a problem to solve, why go around pointing your finger at others who do? That aside, I thought that this challenge was a TERRIFIC idea and was a great way to not only show the designer’s flexing their creative muscles, but it finally gave us, the viewers, a better idea of who these designers are and where they came from.
Ever since the “Everyday Woman” challenge my attention to PR3 has become increasingly more intense, and with challenges ranging from “High Flying Fashion” to “Couture du Jour,” I not only look forward to the collections at Olympus Fashion Week, but to the rest of the challenges as well. I must admit that I have my personal favorites: Uli (even more if she can do tailored pieces) and Michael (because he’s been creative and humble since day one) but must admit that at this point, I’m pretty open to whomever filling that third Fashion Week spot … as long as I get to see my Uli and Michael! I would be intrigued to see what Jeffrey would show, but with the finale show happening in a matter of days, I guess I don’t have to wait too much longer.

I agree with your picks for the final 2, and hope that Kayne will be the 3rd finalist.
I do, however, think that Robert Best should have won the whole thing. Clearly he must have spurned Michael Kors' advances and gotten the entire Project Runway production team against him as a result. Robert's stuff was consistently wonderful and those judges were more scripted than the Bush Administration in their reading the same silly comments about "your dress was boring"... "you are boring us"... "boring, boring, boring"... and "that outfit doesn't look a THING like Jackie Kennedy." MY EYE. That outfit was THE PERFECT 2006 Jackie Kennedy outfit. I adored it. Robert was screwed.

Daniel,
I think after tonight it's very clear that the final four are all extremely talented designers. I think the two people in jeopardy after tonight are Jeffrey and Uli.
Laura has been borderline boring the past few weeks. Yes, she's had some good garments over the season, but she really redeemed herself tonight in the eyes of the judges. Her architectural style is elegant and stylized, but she needs to make sure it's contemporary, timeless, and most importantly, look good on today's woman.
Jeffrey had a rough start, particularly grabbing the judges eyes. He obviously has a very distinguished vision and has the technical skill to create ambitious garments, but he has embraced his LA-style and needs to show that he can expand this genre to a broader market appeal and at the very least create pieces that can mix and match across the social board.
I am extremely concerned about Uli. She has a brilliant eye for pattern and creating visual (versus physical) texture through her use of pattern. This is not an easy skill to come by, in fact I'd argue it's pretty rare. I'd love to see what she would send down the runway in a collection, but I think she needs to show the judges she's more than just a Miami dress maker.
Last but not least, Michael, another diamond in the rough. His fearless composure sets him apart from the crowd and he knows just how to tailor his style to the assignments and task at hand. I'm slightly concerned though that he has brought enough of himself to the competition. Michael Kors is on par that Michael pays meticulous attention to details (from head to toe), but I think he needs to focus on what makes Michael Michael so that he is distinguished enough from the crowded urban-wear market.
It's going to be a tough decision for the judges as there is a lot of fresh, raw talent on the runway.
Best wishes to them all..
A designer's work is never done.

i totally agree that michael should make it to fashion week. i think that all of his designs have been not only good looking but well thought out as well. he always has something interesting to add to his explanation of an outfit. like the every woman challege when he made the reversable dress. or when they did the famous people and he made those shorts out of the hot pink. he had an explanation as to why he chose to make shorts. he never really says "oh i made this because i thought it looked cute". he is very talented and even if he does not win i hope that he does get somewhere in the business. i would buy his clothes.

Hi Daniel!
What a great blog. I especially loved your comments about Vincent's completely unnecessary sexual reference. Yikes! I nearly gagged every time he uttered that phrase.
Since you asked, here are my designer choices for fashion week:
1. Michael. I love this guy. His designs are so intelligent and thoughtful. And he's shown incredible variety in his pieces.
2. Jeffrey. I'm not crazy about his work, but he has a definite point of view. Kudos to him for taking risks. Although if we were basing our choices on personality, Jeffrey would not be on my list. Making Angela's mom cry, for God's sake. What a monster.
3. Hmmmm ... I'm going to have to go with Laura. She really knocked me over with the cocktail dress. Gorgeous! Even though Uli has an amazing way with prints and colors, all her pieces are starting to look the same. I'm impressed with the tailored approach Laura has taken. Also, I'm in my mid-40s and I can see myself in some of her designs. I guess I'm partial to someone who has an eye for my demographic.
Thanks for your postings, Daniel. They're always a pleasure to read!

Good blog. If I could have it my way, the top three would be Michael, Uli, and Jeffrey. I think Laura has created some nice piece, and I think she has such a marvelous elegance to her. But, I personally don't think she has steered much away from what she always does. (But, I guess you could make that argument for a few of the contestants) I'm really really hoping that Michael will take it all. I think that he deserves to win. He has had the most wins, and has not yet had a low score. (then again, that sounds a bit like last season doesnt it, daniel?)
Michael thinks about all of his garments very thoroughly, and does not just stick to the same thing. And, you're right, he's so humble, which is refreshing to see.
That being said, with utmost respect to the judges, I think they have really made some poor decisions this season. Personally, I think that Kayne and Angela (and probably a few others)should have left way before Bradley and Alison.
I could go on and on, but I'll stop.
love love!

I just wanted to say that I was so happy to see Vincent leave.
I thought he was kind of arrogant.
Maybe that's just me.
As for who the final three should be...I'd have to say:
1.Michael because his garments have been my favorites since day one. He really knows how to put them together.
2.Uli because she seems super sweet and I love her dresses. I love patterns.
3.Laura...just because Jeffrey gets on my nerves.
I was really sad when Bradley got elliminated...sent home...auf'd...whatever.
He was adorable.

I'll be honest. I can look through tons of fashion shows and see some whacked out crazy ass shit that blurs the lines of is it fashion or is it just a statement. That doesn't appeal to me. Granted, I wonder sometimes if Daniel V's Orchid top from last season wasn't a "statement piece," though it looked absolutley gorgeous on the model. All This being said. I would like to see Michael and Laura have their shows during fashion week and let the crazy kids of Uli and Jeffrey fight it out for the final spot. Both Michael and Laura make very practical clothes for the most part and I love that. I can see my sister strutting about in many of their pieces. In fact, if she wouldn't itch like a flea on a white dog I'd love to see my sis in Laura's "For Nuts Only" dress. Uli, God love her, does pattern wonderfully. How she does it? I'm not sure. Maybe it's coke, maybe it's the german heritage...or maybe she just gets pattern. I'm going with the ultimate of those three. Jeff...I'll be honest I didn't get the asylum chic thing he did early in the season. It didn't appeal to me, then he started to do pieces that looked a little less bedlam and a little more sophisticated. I'll be excited to see all the shows. I'm a loyal Vogue (US, Italia, and UK) reader and cannot wait regardless of the outcome. Bring on some North American stick figures in some gorgeousness.

I completely agree with Michael and Uli! I've loved everything Michael has created. and the third person... I can't really decide. I'm happy we get to see both Laura's and Jeffrey's show though... I hope they were good!

I think the top three will be jeffrey, michael and laura. Laura broke out of her sternum exposing shell and really brought the bacon for the last challenge. Now I've loved every dress Ulli has done, I'm an Ulli-fan, but the judges always have the same commentary about her print rut week after week. And just like Kayne, whose sometimes questionable taste booted him from the runway, so will the judge's weariness of he 'miami chic'.

This is my favorite show. I watch the episodes of season 3 over and over whenever they're on. Michael is definitely my favorite, I loooved his pink outfit for the icon challenge. His cocktail dress was also fantastic. I used the sparkly belt look for a dress at my formal dance last night. Thanks Michael! haha.
Uli is my other favorite. I love her personality and it really shows in her clothes. She works amazingly with prints, obviously. She's really great at every piece. Her light purple long couture dress was amazing. I want it! There have been so many times when Uli should have won. I hope she makes it to the final 3.
Laura's good and all, as are most of her works. But it's not clothes I'm interested in, being young. Her cocktail dress was really pretty though. I think her or Jeffrey should be the next to go.
Jeffrey is just an asshole. He's rude and doesn't care for other people's feelings, all he cares about is hisself and his kind of scrappy looking clothes. They don't look put together at all. I hated his couture dress. And his 'rock' look, whatever. His neck also REALLY scares me.
Thank you for addressing Vincen'ts scary references! When he was talking about his 'recyclable art' that looked like a walking wired up paper machye (sp?) ... thing, he kept repeating how much it 'turned him on' He also just seems too obsessed with himself.
Kayne had a tacky style. I think he should have been kicked off for his recyclabe green thing. No one liked it. I do like his personality though. He seems really sweet. (:
Angela was just.. ugh. She complained too much and I didn't like her style. I was mad when her and Vincent got to come back.
Nice blog, by the way!

Hey Daniel,
Now that Kayne is gone I think I would like to see Uli win, I really like her designs. Even though she always does a lot with patterns, she did show she can do other things in the Paris challenge. I also like Michael, he really seems to pay attention to detail. I think for the final spot, however, I would like to see Laura because to me it seems she makes the same dress in different versions every time, so I would like to see what she would make for 12 different garments. However I noticed the preview for the next episode of PR said that the judges were fine with only putting 2 designers in for fashion week. Only time can tell!

p.s. i know jeffrey is an ass. the "real woman" ep gave a lot of insight as to part of his problem. his mommy was definitely the indulgent type. she called him an alcoholic, he called himself a "junkie". so, his problems were probably more than alcoholism. he may be an asshole, and crybaby, but, he can rock it.
also, does anybody out there think that maybe, just maybe, that angela and her mom were full of it? when angelas' mom was talking about the "hate" in jeffreys' voice, did anyone really hear hate? also, when she was cupping her head in her hands and "crying", did anyone actually see a single tear being shed? i mean, really. any moisture around the eyes at all? i didn't. the whole thing was kinda phony. just a theory.

Daniel, I was a big fan last season, and enjoy your blog very much. I think this season has seen some real talent and innovation, but I disagree with Tim Gunn- I think season two had more overall talent.
I think that the final three (if indeed there is a final three- per the most recent Bravo promo) will be Laura, Michael, and Jeffrey. I think it is a close race between Laura and Uli, but Uli has become too "one-note" whereas Laura has shown that she can vary her designs while still keeping her unique point of view. Michael, obviously, has shown great versatility throughout the season, and, although his early pieces were largely ignored, everything he has sent down the runway (with exception of the coture dress) has been impressive. Jeffrey has a definite point of view, but he has begun to become a self-parody; he reminds me very much of Santino at the end of Season Two, but with better execution. His black-and-white dress bothered me more than I can say- I understand the reasoning behind Kayne's Auf-ing, but Jeffrey should have been gone, in my opinion. Seriously, faux leather leggings? Also, I should state that I think at least part of the reason Jeffrey won the coture challenge is due to his superior model. Marilinda strutted that runway and sold that LaCroix-"inspired" tablecloth for all she was worth, and it was the only dress that looked alive on the runway.
To sum up- Michael wins the whole thing, because he deserves it as a designer. Jeffrey will whine that no one "gets" him and he will never understand that, essentially, he continued to design the same clothes on PR that he has been designing for Cosa Nostra for years.

BTW, I'd like to share my cents on Chloe, who was mentioned by one comment here. I like Chloe Dao. Besides her clean line, She has something that others may not have yet, that is her acute business sense which will carry her a long way in a very competitive world.

Hi Daniel - thank you for your blog. I find that the designers in Season 2 had more fun with the teasing etc and it was thoroughly enjoyable. It was too bad that Allison was auf'd; AND the only reason Angela won was because of Michael's and Laura's sensible fashion in-put. I really hate to see any one of them dismiss: Uli, Jeffrey, Laura, Michael..they are all very talented. I do agree with everyone that Michael outshines them all...after seeing just some of the runway show, I was amazed at Jeffrey's line, absolutely beautiful...Uli's was predictable, of what was shown....not too much of Laura's was shown so I cannot honestly make any comment. Cannot wait to see the whole show. Best reality show and great blog; thank you for your talent in every way.

I am still getting over Keith being kicked off, I thought that he would have been the one to beat. He showed great designs in the first couple of challenges, but rules are rules.
