Driven to Distraction

I have dreams and goals and stuff to do around the house. These are the things this week that kept me from getting to any of it.

“It takes a village of gay designers to build a cabana.”

So says young Michael halfway through episode 3 of “Top Design.” With last week’s eliminate-ee John out of the picture, Michael’s brought it down a few notches and is actually fun to watch, especially when he snaps back at the judges with a “Gilligan’s Island” reference, which we’ll get to later on.

In the meantime, I think I’ve cracked the mystery of Goil’s stylish spectacles. Last week, I wasn’t sure if he had one cool pair of glasses or several because they seem to change color but now I think I’ve figured it out; it’s one pair but they’re ‘mood glasses’ and the frames change color based on Goil’s mood.

Goil goes through a veritable rainbow of moods/colors in this episode, which starts with host Todd Oldham laying out this week’s challenge and demonstrating that while not everyone can rock an argyle sweater, he sure can. Todd, who’s gotten remarkably better at delivering his lines since last week, explains to the designers that they’ll be divided into groups of three to create cabanas for three different exotic destinations: Tahiti, Miami and St. Tropez.

I am very disappointed in the pro judges. What was Ms. Russells problem!? The lime green and purple seemed perfectly appropriate for a Miami theme. So, of course, I had to look up Miami deco. The first picture that came up was a lifeguard hut on the beach. SUPRISE! it was lime green and purple. You blew it! It was obvious to me that you all were tired of the over use of that color over the past few years. But they nailed it. And of the three, they hit the mark. The one you chose was elegant, yes, but it was unfinished. I have designed successfully and I have missed the mark on occasion. But of all the things to judge, Why paint? That is the easiest thing to correct. You should bring Elizabeth back. I have only caught a couple shows, but you guys are harsh. And having worked with high profile designers, the ego driven designers are my most unfavorite. Ideas and creativity go a lot further than a designer that pushes their style on clients.
