This past week the cast of 'WorkOut" and many other people suffered a loss. Doug Blasdell, my friend and cast-mate, left this planet to upgrade to a lush suite located on the hippest strip in Heaven. He departed suddenly, leaving most people in his life shocked and greatly saddened.
It is never easy to understand why someone as wonderful and genuine as Doug need depart at such a young age. There are many different belief structures surrounding death, but if you knew Doug, you have to believe that he wouldn't leave us unless he was ready to do so.
When you suffer the loss of a loved one, the incident always makes you evaluate your own life and the contributions you are making here on Earth. Doug leaves behind a legacy of compassion, love, and beauty -- in my book, that is the definition of success.
So ... a new year packed tight with new resolutions, right? How is everyone doing with that? I think I broke about half of my resolutions by the 2nd -- but those were just the throw away ones anyway. No harm, no foul, right?
Well, since I have been given my own blog, I will assume that it gives me the right to stand on a soap box from time to time. Now please don't think that I feel, in any way, like I know more than anyone else, nor do I want you to think that I feel as though anyone should listen to me if they don't want to.
With that out of the way, here are a few suggestions that may help make this year a bit more... bright?
1. Call your parents and grandparents and find out what their views on life are. I just had the greatest trip home for the holidays. I brought a camcorder with me and sat my grandparents down and ask them just that. "What's life all about ... and what advice do you have for future generations?"
Man, the wealth of knowledge that they have. The advice that stuck with me the most (and I admit it's because I am a hopeless romantic and just met a great guy) was about relationships. They have been married something crazy- like 56 years, and they admit, it ain't always pretty, and you often want to walk away, but if you base your relationships in love, and are willing to stick with it no matter what, then the results are historic. I love you Grandma and Grandpa!
