This past week the cast of 'WorkOut" and many other people suffered a loss. Doug Blasdell, my friend and cast-mate, left this planet to upgrade to a lush suite located on the hippest strip in Heaven. He departed suddenly, leaving most people in his life shocked and greatly saddened.
It is never easy to understand why someone as wonderful and genuine as Doug need depart at such a young age. There are many different belief structures surrounding death, but if you knew Doug, you have to believe that he wouldn't leave us unless he was ready to do so.
When you suffer the loss of a loved one, the incident always makes you evaluate your own life and the contributions you are making here on Earth. Doug leaves behind a legacy of compassion, love, and beauty -- in my book, that is the definition of success.
Not one person can utter a negative thing about him. He was beautiful, caring and sincere. He touched everyone he came in contact with positively. Truly, a man who would give you the shirt off his back. He will be missed and thought upon always.
Doug's passing has made me ponder my own life. As I grow-up (a continuous process), I am learning the importance of letting everyone I hold close to my heart know how much I appreciate their presence in my life. I never get off the phone without saying I love you. Though everyone understands how busy life can get, I still try to make my presence apparent in the lives of those around me.
It's important to give without needing to receive anything in return. I also am learning that holding on to feelings of anger or hurt will get you absolutely nothing. It is so much easier to forgive and move on then it is to hold a grudge.
Sometimes life seems to get in the way, but it is important to understand that this life is all we have. A very wise sage told me this week, our only job as human beings -- OUR ONLY JOB -- is to be joyful. It is unfortunate that it takes an incident like the death of a loved one to remind us of that. Hey, no one is perfect -- but if we can all take a moment and evaluate what is truly important, I believe we would find the same answer.
I don't believe that Doug would want anyone to be sad for him. Though I understand that is an impossibility -- after the pain lifts a bit, I think we will understand that Doug was here to prove that one can live in love everyday. He always said to live each day as if it were your last.
And so, in honor of him, I will do just that.
Doug was, in one word, "wonderful". Though I will miss seeing his face, I know he is right here with me, with all of us- and that gives me an incredible sense of comfort. Doug- you are very loved, and very missed, and it makes me very happy to know that wherever you are, you are at peace.
Love and Blessings to all! xxx, Jesse

Just tonight I read in Advocate of Doug Blasdell's passing. Just recently I'd started following the show in reruns. And Doug Blasdell was the draw!
I only got to know Doug's inner beauty on a repeat of WorkOut. Why after a rerun? Well...
When the show first came on, I regrettably admit to dismissing it's concept, Jackie, AND this gorgeous man (Doug) as just purveyors of Circuit L.A. GymRat propaganda with no substance. Shame on me and my jaded self. Thank God I accidentally caught an episode in passing. Literally.
My Tivo helped cath me up with retroactive episodes. I was at once suprised and won over! Doug proved to be such a sweetheart.
There's one episode where he comforts co-trainer Zen during a hike trail. If you guys watched, you'll know which one I mean. I forget what he told her to assuage her anxiety but it brought me to tears. I don't cry easily, but it spoke volumes about his spirit.
I remember thinking: "His boyfriend hit the lottery with this guy" Who hasn't longed for a boyfriend like Doug, yet too often endep up disappointed by the rampant emptiness in this lifestyle?
Yet here was this Doug guy. Real, not made up. I was humbled. The exchange with Zen just renewed my faith in finding a deeper commitment with someone. And boy was I surprised he was 44. TOTALLY didn't look it! Beauty all around.
I'm late to do so, but I miss him just the same. The world needs more human beings like Doug. So wherever you are, they're gonna love you, Doug Blasdell... Just like WE did!

Now, I am new to watching your program and found it extremely entertaining. Your show gets you hooked on all the trainers lives in and out of the gym. I was very sorry on Doug's passing. He was very special. The brief time I was able to view him on WorkOut and then finding out he was no longer with us gave me a kick in the pants. What devastating news. I had watched the first episode of the new season and later realized that I had preset my DVR to record the show. I had missed the beginning so I thought I would watch it again. Having read the dedication, I researched online to find that Doug had passed away. What a shock. Jesse, your eulogy was beautiful and thoughtfully written. From watching the first season of Workout, I loved Doug's amazing soul. He cared very much about his friends and his coworkers. He had the calmness and peacefulness of someone who has grown wise from life experiences. I can only hope you (Jesse) and I discover such groundedness and resolve. Doug is truely an inspiration. He will be sorely missed and I am saddened that such a beautiful person has left us. May he be in a better place, a place where he is appreciated as much as he is still appreciated here.
On a lighter note, I have to say "Workout", season one, was truely inspiring. I started workout out again last summer and began my journey to good fitness. Last December, I began to work harder on nutrition, cycling the workouts to shock my muscles and my 6-pack abs was the payoff. I think your show doesn't emphasize nutrition enough. I know the show's name is Workout but the show is also about healthy living. Jesse, in watching the first episode of the new season, I was suprised that you have stopped working out and was eating poorly. It would have been more inspiring if you would have shared your culinary expertise to give us creative and tasty ways of making healthy eating more flavorful and easy. I eat 5 to 6 times a day and I'm always looking for tasty healthy recipes. You are a role model for many and that comes with responsibilities. In the past I've used food for comfort and I still allow myself to do that but only for a day and then I'm right back on the healthy track. When I workout but even more when I eat well, I get the satisfaction of knowing that I love myself enough to give my body the loving care it should have. Jesse, you're an attractive, entertaining, loving man. You need to kick yourself in the ass and love yourself by caring for it better.

I very accidentally caught an episode of this show, which I had not heard of this past week. This particular episode centered around the mythical gay hierarchy that many gay men use to value or more accurately devalue each other based on a superficial and transparent systems, especially true in gay subculture, with typical hallmarks being physical beauty, gym schedules, body fat percentages, material possessions, top/bottom and such. All people, every person has value. It is apparent from reading the postings here that Mr. Blasdell was a role model to many people, most of who didn't know him personally. What makes one a role model has infinite possibilities. Those who knew him personally suffer the loss of him leaving much too soon and I hope, as he goes to whatever is to be found beyond, gave them a long backward glance.

Thanks for your comments about Doug, and for being a strong role model and an insiration.
All my best to you and your WorkOut team.

WOW! I was so surprise when I ran into this article. I was surfing the net of Bravotv.com and I was just wondering how come there was not any video's blogs of Doug or pictures in the Workout link. That's when I saw this and I felt speechless to find out that Doug had died. I can't imagine the feeling of his co-workers, friends and relatives for I am a TV viewer and even I can miss him. I have to agree with every bit of this article. Let's try to be happy for his life, for God lent him was lent to his family to make them happier, to his friends to be their friend and even to us, the TV viewers to enjoy our nights and learn a bit more on how to have a healthier lifestyle, which I am sure he would have agree starts in our minds. I am sure he will be missed but I am surer that he will be remembered, and that's what makes a man great when his dreams, the one's he builds during his lifetime can go beyond life and become everybody else's dreams...

I was shocked and extremely saddened when I just found out about his passing. I normally don't watch much television, but when I was flipping through channels on tv, I came across Bravo. Workout was on. I knew I wanted to watch it, because I always thought it was a fun show to watch. This episode I watched was of when Doug and Jesse made up by the pool. After the show was over with, I just had to check out bravotv.com and just find out more information on the show in general, and read bios of everyone. Well when I reached the last person on the list... it was Doug's. I didn't notice until I read his bio, there was an update, I immediately started crying. The first thought in my head was... "how?" It just makes me sit and wonder about life in general. How life is so unpredictable, and anything can happen. I really thought Doug was an amazing person. He was very attractive and genuine. I could sense it already because of his personality on the show. I know... from this day on... I will never take anything or anybody for granted for whatever reason. It isn't neccessary. It's so important to live each day as if it's the last... My heart goes to Doug's family and friends. I know I will be affected by this for some time.

I clicked on Doug's link only to see the sad tragedy under the editors notes. Watching last season was truly a learning experience, seeing the passion Doug put into everything and how much everyone enjoyed his company has made me want to be like him. I only expect to learn and grow more watching this season. My heart goes out to Doug's friends and family. He truly will be missed.

He seemed so warm and you never saw him taking snipes at others - which makes him a role model for men and women and gays and straights and old and young. Very nice tribute Jesse ~ I have a hard time sometimes understanding how some things are referred to as "gay" or "for the gay community" etc. When I see Doug on the Workout episodes, I think of him as a professional, sincere, giving guy with such a pure heart...and yes he was gorgeous but his spirit was the real draw. Likewise unless Jesse or Jackie, etc. are having some big drama that focuses on their sexuality, I see them as PEOPLE, people I like to enjoy watching and learning from, people who have good days and bad days and definitely remarkable enough people not to be defined by their choice of partners. Being raised in Alabama (I know), I decided at an early age to be open minded and not follow the judgmental path because none of us are so good we have a right to judge others. After reading the blogs and seeing how proud everyone is of positive gay role models, I have to say my heart is really there for you all because being straight is just who I am, like being gay is just who you are. I have good days and not so good days, great business deals, disappointments, delays and disagreements with my husband just like everyone else. If I had to wake up everyday knowing that people who don't even know me were more focused on the intimate facets of my being, than just the joy and professionalism and love and kindness I put out there, it would be hard to be a positive, giving person. I pray for open mindedness and love for all of us in this world. Every day. One day, being a positive role model will be just that ~ A positive role model, gay, straight...whatever. In the meantime, thank you for sharing insights that some of us would otherwise not know.

As I viewed the preview from last week's episode, I was stunned about what was to come. I immediately logged on to Bravo's website and found out about Doug's untimely passing back in January. As with most fans of Doug and the show, my heart was filled with sorrow and grief. Doug seemed like such a level-headed, genuinely nice guy. He appeared to be such an inspiration to his clients but I have taken it upon myself to use him as an inspiration in my workout and eating habits. When I lack the desire to go to the gym or tempted by a high calorie, fat-laden nutritionally deficiently meal, I ask myself that if I was Doug's client, what would Doug say. That really is all the motivation I need to get my ass to the gym or opt for a healthier meal. Doug, you look down on us from heaven and you continue to inspire us. You are and will always be missed.

I found out just now as I started watching Work Out Marathon on Bravo and they dedicated the season to Doug. Doug, I never met you but you had such charisma and sincerity that extended far beyond a television screen. You left the earth one month before my Grandpa so I know you are surrounded by wonderful people in that beautiful place we here on earth call Heaven. I can't help but cry for your family's lose, your friends lose, Jackie's lose and me, the viewer's, lose. You Will Be Greatly Missed. Rest In Peace.

I was amazed about Doug Blasdell's death...Doug was such an example of strength amongst adversity. Ofourse his status was not the focus of who he was or the show, however, he truly has served as an example of Strengh when your faced with something that could be life debilitating in so many ways. When viewed on Workout, he seemed so full of life and stress free. I hope that many people facing adversity can take his life as an example and live everday to the fullest.

Doug was fun fun funny, din't he not want to celebrate his recent birthday because both his parents passed at that age he was becoming?
Then the show aired his birthday, all was fine, next thing boom Dooug's sick, somehting regarding kidneys and dialysis. Is there something educational the show could inform us about???? Why such a healthy wonderful person suddenly, (so it seemed)becomes seriously ill and passes on?!

Jesse -
What a wonderful gift that you and Doug were able to patch up your differences long before this tragedy. It was obvious that the loss of the two of yours commorodity was a very painful experience for him, as well as you. Thank God for his mercy that you were the one that extended your hand in forgiveness and expressed desire to rebuild the relationship and friendshipt that y'all once shared. You had no way of knowing that Doug's time was limited therefore, the olive brance you extended was done from the heart, not in a hospital room during a time of a medical crisis or worse yet, at a funneral. Though this is a tough time for you, do not get caught up in the past problems between you and Doug, as you, like a man, stepped up to the plate and out of your love for Doug as a human being, was willing to extend forgiveness and therefore allow healing. Don't let anything steal that from you. It is easy during times like these to go back in time and blame yourself or feel like what if I had not done this or done this, or reacted a certain way due to a betrayel that you felt. Don't do that. You made ammends when as far as you and everyone else knew there was no urgent reason to do so. That speaks volumes. Brothers fight Jesse. Sometimes brothers fight for a long time, But brothers make up and stick together and in the end that is what you did. Focus on that. Thank God for giving you the desire to reconcille, for softening your heart, and allowing you the time to rectify the situation between you and Doug. Especially in light of the fact that God knew the time was at hand, you did not - but you acted. Focus on that Jesse. Thank God for it. If not, you would be plagued with regrets and guilt. That of which, if you are dealing with that, get rid of it, as you do not have anything to regret. Doug appeared to be totally devestated and on a daily deal with it during the time when y'all had your disagreement. For you to come to him and forgive him and extend your hand meant more to him then you might realize.
My prayers go out to all, especially you as I sense that you might be going through a difficult time. Hang in there. For yourself, and for Doug. If I can say one thing for you to take away with you - No regrets. You have no regrets.

I am just devastated and blown away. To be honest I do not watch a lot of TV and the only time i do is while I am on the treadmill and workout which is how i got hooked onto the show and to the charming person Doug was. I feel badly about learning about Doug's passing away just now. He was a role model for me as an openly gay man who lived his life as an individual who practically radiated joy with his warmth. I feel like i have lost a friend.
Jesse - my heartfelt condolences to you and to all of Doug's family (which includes all his well wishers). I am POSITIVE he is happy wherever he is as good things happen to good people and Doug came across as an exceptional human being who touched our hearts. My workouts will never be the same for me again ever.

My brother passed 11 years ago. Doug really reminded me of him. I wish I could remember my brothers daily rules to live by but I think they were along the lines of Doug's. My brother had a thing for humming birds as well. One memory that I will cherish is watching him, standing at the kitchen window, just looking. By this time his illness had made him weak and dimentia was making him mentally crippled. He was a shadow of his former self. He stood looking out the window and suddenly a hummingbird appeared. His eye's lit up and he excitedly pointed at it. He looked at me and said 'Look'! For a brief moment I had my brother back and it felt like we were children again. I miss him and I share your loss.

I have never watched the Workout show, but I did have Doug as my trainer back in 1992 to 1995. And I would later often see him around town and at the gym, we stayed friendly. It's true what everyone has said, Doug was a gentle soul and beautiful person. I agree that he was a (my) role model, and I'm glad I got to tell him so when I had the chance. He made me love going to the gym and he worked me out harder than I have ever worked out. I believe that the gains I made with Doug's direction and guidance are still a part of me. Before my legs were knobby knees and stick calves, and when Doug got through with them they looked like Doug's legs. He told me once that I had more potential than he had because I was taller and better proportioned. Can you imagine someone like Doug telling you that? He was just so inspiring to be around even when not working out with him. He once asked me for a ride home after we worked out. And he invited me in to have lunch when we got there. I was a client really, but was treated like a friend. Once I lost 30 pounds and I felt like I looked pretty good, Doug told me (in his kind way of course) no, that I did not look as good as I should and that I needed to lose another 10lbs. He is the only person that could say that and not make me feel bad. Another time I ran into him when he was coming into Gold's gym and he asked me if I had extra batteries for his walkman. I had them and gave them to him. For a couple of years later I kept reminding him about those batteries he owed me....but it was all in fun. I think he was "meant to be" one of the stars of this show so that the rest of America (and the world) could appreciate what he had to offer all of us. And now because of the show - he will live forever. I am going to work REALLY HARD to get back into the condition I was in when I had Doug's positive force working for and with me. I'll try to always keep some of that with me when I work out. I still do the same routine(s) he showed me over ten years ago. While there is a big empty gap in us since he has passed, I do like that he became well known beyond the local fitness scene, and is a part of something much much larger now with Workout. But it still hurts to know I will not be running into him ever again.

Jesse, i am so saddened by the loss of Doug. I started watching the show from the beginning and am a big fan of it. I think all of you are great, a little crazy sometimes but i still enjoy the show. Doug was just a beautiful person, on the birthday episode where he said he didn't like birthday's anymore he looked so sad. I know he said his family didn't live past the 40's and that scared him. It's funny but he knew something was coming up. He was prepared i just can't believe he's gone. He is and always will be a beautiful person and i hope he can hear me and help me with his spirit to take better care of myself and lose the weight that i have always dreamed of losing but just can't push myself hard enough to try. Take care Jesse and i'm so glad you and Doug made up, i know it's a hard thing to do. To let bygones be bygones, but i'm so happy you guys did (Doug's persistent paid off). He did love you very much and it showed, he'll always be with you and your friends. Take care Jesse, i will always miss Doug!! (I too feel like as if i knew him personally) God be with you all! (oh and Jackie you are so good if i had you at my home for a couple of months i know you would kick my derriere and make me feel better about myself!!)

It will probably be hard for you and your friends/co-workers to believe that it has been a whole year since Doug's passing, but I am only NOW getting into "Workout" thanks to reruns and the start of Season Three. I had heard of the show and even read news about Doug's death, but none of it really registered with me at the time, since I wasn't watching the show.
I watched the Bravo WORKOUT marathon the day of Season Three's premiere. I missed most of Season One, but only having seen a few episodes of that season and most of Season Two, Doug's inner and outer beauty hit me like a lightning bolt. I knew it would be hard to keep it together when the announcement came, but I didn't expect how hard it would be to take, even knowing in advance. I don't think seeing BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN made me cry that hard.
For lack of a better way to put this, it's almost as if Doug were an angel who got to stay here on Earth with us by accident. Or maybe not...there are too few people like him, who have the ability to move you and affect you without even getting to know them personally.
I used to be well over 100 lbs. overweight, and through determination, consistency and a lot of hard work, I lost just over 77 lbs. in just about six months. I had some great people to help me on my journey, and now I wish that Doug had been one of them. I think he would've made the rough times a whole lot easier to bear.
I am completely addicted to WORKOUT now, and feel like I've come to know you, Jackie, Zen, Erika, Brian and everyone else so well. But the best thing about this show is that in spite of the tragic circumstances, people will continue to experience at least a small part of Doug's beautiful smile and sweet spirit thanks to reruns, and I hope he continues to remind people about what's most important in life, the same way he's done for me.
And thanks for your beautiful tribute to him. Truer words...

I too am just starting to watch Workout for the first time and the first episode I saw was the one in which Doug dies.
Then Bravo aired a marathon from earlier in the season in which Skylab is formed and Doug meets with his client for the first time. I thought he was very inspiring in what he said to her and how he said it. I'd like to know what becomes of her because, if I'd been his client, I think I would've gone all out to get in killer shape and live up to the hope he inspired in me.
He's definitely one of those angels among us. I wish I could've seen much more of him.
