Episode One: I Feel Fat

Man, oh MAN!

It is always interesting to see how all the events that took place over the past several months present themselves in an hour long show. Right off the bat there were tons of issues that we were all working through. Since last season a lot of tension built up between a few of us, mostly Doug and myself.

Reviewing the show, it just reminds me of how silly and trivial it all was. Our words carry a lot of power, and the one lesson that I have learned since filming, is that you must be careful with what you say.

NUP_104362_0381.jpg

Man I feel fat watching that episode. Now you gotta understand, compared to the rest of the perfect bodies on the show, most people would look chubby. I am a chef, which means that I am constantly surrounded by yummy treats.... EVERY DAY ALL DAY!!! Still, being a trainer at the same time means that I need to pick up the slack and trim down ... which is highly emphasized in this episode.

Hey Jesse,
You are beautiful inside and out. I love your sense of humor, and it is nice to see a trainer who knows their stuff, but does not have to have the buff body to prove it. You are great just the way you are. I live up in Santa Cruz...orig from the Midwest, and I hope your life in CA is going well. CA is a very different experience for me than I anticipated and I have lived here since '94. I love the program Workout, its my soap opera of choice, but mostly, I enjoy the genuinness you bring to the show!!

Bless your little rainbow heart though for showing the whole big world your lil luv pillow on national TV. I think I woulda had to strangle me some Jackie W. if she had made me take my shirt off infront of cameras while I was in my plus sized stage of life.

I really loved you Jesse when Jackie hired you last season as the "new trainer" and even felt sorry for you for what the "gang" (mainly Brian) put you through with the initiation and what you had to endure when you were house sitting for Jackie. After watching the first episode of the second season and now knowing that Doug passed away made me upset for watching the bickering that I think you made a big deal about. After reading your blog I appreciate what you said about it being trivial. I look forward to watching more of you on the show. Peace.

Jesse, you are adorable, but your little body looked so out of shape when you were running on the beach. I don't want to embarrass you, but you really looked kind of dorky in that clip! you are still precious but pull it together darlin
also, yes you remind me of 'Just Jack' as well. But why do you find that to be a critical statement? He's adored by many many people. You should of said thank you. Talk about discriminating in your own community.
Your showed to be a little hypocritical there. You better come down a little from that high horse you must be riding kiddo! At this point, you can only hope to become as beloved as Jack is. Whoa boy.

Hi Jesse. Love the show and loved the premiere. I am extremely saddened to find out about Doug Blasdell's passing. He was truly an inspiration and an awesome trainer. I really hope that you were able to make ammends with him before he died. I honestly believed that he meant no harm toward you in his interview and he even apologized to you for any harm it may have caused. I think a lesson can be learned by all of the viewers; holding grudges or seeking revenge is never worth it. Life is precious and friendships are priceless. Thanks so much for your blog and perspective from the show. I'll keep watching :).

Luette Berbena wrote:

What does Jackie see in MiMI? My God, what a totally nasty, selfish, classless, homely little chick. Jackie is such a contrast of Mimi. She 'is' a beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, classy woman. I become so emotionally protective of Jackie when she's around, that uncivilized female. I just want to kick her ass! And, she has the ugliest mouth for a woman! Was she a feral child by any chance? Her biting, snapping ,& emotionally deficiant ways could really sugest she had been. When I saw the previews of Jackie with Rebecca, I am so routing for them at this point.
All pettiness aside, I am so glad you all chose to do another season. I'm truly looking forward to the next few months of episodes.
Also, I did notice that this season was dedicated in memory of Doug. I was hoping so much that it was not true what I had seen yet actually knew in my heart it was.
A few years ago I lost my only child and husband. I am very familiar with the pain of loss. In the first segment I could only focus on what you all must be going through at this time. I am so sorry for all of you and share in some of your pain. How emotionally difficult the airing of this season must be for you all.I am finding the need to block it out somewhat so I am able to stay with the episode. This is in no way of disrespect, just necessary of concentration. I mention this so you know why I did not make mention of this first. I want so badly to know what happened & what occured. I assume more will be known in time. As myself, I am sure other viewers are feeling your pain.
It has already made me feel a special closeness
to you all, without having to know you. Strength and God be with you all.

I really hope that what happened between you and Doug was resolved prior to his passing. It would be awful to have to go through life with that guilt. I hope that you saw that the whole thing was meant as a compliment to you and not an insult.
As a straight married woman who watches Will and Grace every night. Every woman I know would have loved to have had a male friend like Jack. Funny, handsome and gay. A man who would go shopping to us or to the salon or out for dinner. A friend who would always be open and honest with us but would say and do it with grace....
Don't take it as an insult..

Jesse...love the show and so sad to hear about Doug. After watching the show last night, I have to agree with Doug on his comment about your being like "Jack". Well, sort of. What we've seen of you is quirky, campy, jokey, not really focused on training, gossipy, and kind of immature. So you have been acting like the "Jack" to Jackie's "Will". Maybe you had a more masculine image of yourself in your mind that TV has shattered. In any case, there are always going to be divisions among the gay community because there are just so many variations to the spectrum. Maybe that is your valuation scale, because there are many drag queens that would disagree with your placing them on the bottom of your "relevance scale". Any gay role models put out there are positive, whether they be manly or campy.

I love this show. All the trainers are awesome in their own way and that's why the club does well. There is a personality for every client. I do think Jesse needs to tighten up a bit. Jackie, be real with him and lay out the truth rather than being the friend. You're his boss and he is a reflection on your club. Don't be a wiseass but do what you can to help him out. Giving him crap just makes him defensive. Also, I SO hope that Jesse and Doug worked out their differences before he passed. Life is short and you need to treasure the people in your life. His passing was shocking and watching him during Season 2 is tough, but hopefully as the season moves on, we will see this feud subside.

Jesse,
I watched the first episode last night. It makes me sad that every time I see Doug on the screen it is in the past and he is no longer alive. Despite the little bit of internalized homophobia he expressed in that interview, i and you know that he loved you dearly. I can't imagine what the staff of Sky went through when Doug passed. I'm sure it took a long time to come back from such a blow. I give you all credit for being able to carry on in the face of such sadness.

PS. Mimi is such a beotch, Jackie needs to get a grip and move on, and not with Rebecca who is classic 'bi-curiuous', with a real woman who loves her for all she is.

Kathy wrote:

I hope that the thing between you and Doug was taken care of before he passed... I also hope that you watch the show to hear what he said about Will and Grace and how it was his favorite show and dumb butt was his favorite character, which meant he really liked you. If you have not seen that show WATCH IT!!!! As for you being FAT... I understand that you are a chef (congrats..), but you are also a trainer... you must figure out what is more important to you...training or eating... if you say both, i get that two, but you must fight with the food and know that as a trainer you have to eat better. Fix healthy food, and don't eat after 6. Stay real to yourself

Peter Gard wrote:

Jesse,

I'll just get to the point and tell you how awesome it was to hear you say that (until Jackie) you had never felt fat. It is important to me to see not-anorexic-thin gay men who aren't obsessed with their weight. A lot of us struggle with this constantly and for little reason.

I also wanted to stress how eloquently I thought you expressed your ideas when contronted with the Doug issue over cocktails. Personally, I've always thought that being self-concious about being a femme gay is even worse than being self-concious about acting gay in the first place, for so many reasons. God, I'd love to pick your brain on this topic for hours, just based on the bit you touched on during your dialogues on the show.

Anyway, I hope you're well, and you've gained a new fan this week. Continue feeling proud and confident, because you have every reason to!

I love you and dig your vibe, but you do have to get toned again. Otherwise, the show loses credibility. You are one of the top trainers if you can't achieve it then it comes off as unachieveable. You do not have to be a muscle head just a little more toned. I think a lot of people relate to you because we don't all want to be 4% fat we just want to be toned like a normal person not a tri-athlete. come on Jesse! a little less celebrity cocktails.

I am sad about Dougs' passing. I enjoy watching the show, but after hearing that most of the show is staged, it doesn't make me happy. I have heard this on several occasions. I totally understand that "Reality" shows they are a little scripted, but this one takes the prize. This information that I received on the show isn't gossip, but heard from sources that are on the show. If Jackie is this big gym owner, then why was she working out at 24hr Fitness in Hollywood prior to the premier of Season One? If I had all this money I wouldn't be seen in that gym, but maybe a gym of higher caliber like Equinox. I would love to go to "Sport" and see if it really excist. My final word... And why is it that jsut about every scene we see Jackie in, that isn't in the gym, she has an alcoholic drink in her hand? Count the number of times in one episode she is drinking. That is a good positive role model. I will keep on watching the drama of the show, but knowing it is mostly fake.

You and Doug are the only people worth their salt at this club and you two need to kiss and makeup! He's a friend and I believe him on his remarks as to why he called you Jack. Rod in NYC wrote:

Although TRUE Jesse isn't categorically fat, I DID see Jackie's point. Here's a high-end gym with high-end clients. Clients that come in wanting abs like their trainer has. And what does Jesse have? Flab. Jackie wasn't exactly being a monster about this! Jesse is a reflection of the company and Jackie herself. Jackie's product is her ABILITY as a trainer to tighten, and tone flabby bodies.

If Jesse's body is representing Jackie's ability (which working for her club, it would) then Jackie could be perceived as a total fraud. Her reputation's the most important thing she's got in this business. Should she not take steps to protect it?

Although Jackie's approach was shameful for Jesse,I'm sure looking at himself on T.V. did the trick and Jackie won't have to bug him anymore. Still, I'm certain he'd known he had a problem before she made issue of it.

After all, you can't have sex in L.A. and not become acutely aware with every area of your body in need of improvement. But bottomline In fitness there's either FIT OR FAT. GAY is neither the culprit nor benefactor of this truth. Jesse's cling to the "I'm only gay fat" is in essence a convenient Crutch.

In forcing the trainers to remove their shirts, Jackie removed the Crutch Jesse had relied upon. Honestly, but for this episode I'd have never suspected Jesse had anything other than a perfect body. He hid it well under loose fitting shirts from day one.

The good thing is, he's small enough that with two weeks of no carbs, and some crunches he'll be looking hot. GOOD LUCK, JESSE!

hi jesse, i have been watching the show since day 1 an i feel that the way you treated Doug was atrocious. It was a silly comment and you acted extremly immature about it. I do love you though and your not fat at all like you said its gay fat...

You are so adorable. I just love your smart ass witty comments! I dont think that you shoud feel that you are fat...granted you are a trainer, so your body is your advertisment, but on the other hand, I wouldnt trust a skinny chef...quite the catch 22!! hehe!
Cant wait for the next show!

Jesse,
You make me so angry. I live in a small town and I know NO gay people, so my only experience is what I see on tv. I think it's true what Doug said, it's nice to see a gay man portrayed differently...as a "regular" looking/acting guy, versus an excitable flamey kindof Jack McF guy. Nothing wrong with Jack McF, but is nice to see a contrast. You big dummy, you didn't get it and you took it personally. You're fine and all, but Doug made a good name for gay people as well and you should be ashamed for being so hostile about it. He was level headed and reasonable...just what he wanted people to know, versus you going all psycho....just what we already think gay men do. You missed the big point, buddy.
And yes, you're chubby.
But I'm chubbier so I'll still be tuning in.

While I do agree you could use alittle toning, what disturbed me about the situation is how mean your co workers were. If Jackie is serious about going the next step with her business, I would enroll her staff in a course on sensitivity training. If this is how they act with someone who has a slight problem how will they be with people who really have issues about food and weight. I would definitely think twice about going to that club for training. Particularly Peeler, he is very sensitive about his own stuff, but not so much when it is involves someone else, he actually is the ring leader, and anyone who follows him is suspect in the intellect department. I say to Jesse, just stay healthy and good luck.

I have to "weigh-in" here with my perspective. Jesse...you are adorable and hot. You look good with your shirt on or off! As a slightly chub myself, I have no connection with perfect abs and 5% body fat. You however, look like a real person(well ok, ridiculously handsome real person) and serve as much more of role model to me. So, keep working out and enjoy a doughnut or two. You are why I watch the show. I love that you have your own blog and am impressed with how well written it is.

Jesse,
Hello from Northwestern Pennsylvania. How rural ?? Think Mayberry...on crack. Anyway, love the show and my condolenses to all of you on the loss of Doug. In my personal opinion, from what bits and peices of his life we were fortunate enough to share and the way he was there for Cheo, there is no doubt in my mind that his outter beauty ( SMOKIN' )was only surpassed by a heart even more so. A man very in touch with his feelings, and we could use more like him. No doubt he will be missed by many. The issue between the two of you concerning your respective magazine interviews has been the source of many opinions on your blog. I'm just going to say, things were said, both right and wrong, by both of you. The bigger thing here is the fact that you were able to rise above, and better yet, learn something from this and despite what some may think, that makes you a man in my opinion. While i agree with Peelers opinion that this needed resolved, i did not agree with his extremely poor timing. Its quite clear to me that Peeler has definite " attitude " towards you. I think this stems from day one when he thought he was on the chopping block and you were going to be his replacement. That would be devestating to a man with the ego of Peeler. I think, given your closeness with Jackie, its two parts jealousy and one part insecurity. Mr. Peeler is not used to feeling insecure, or jealous. While i like the others, keep in mind they are jealous of your closeness with the boss lady and they will continue to make catty remarks behind your back. That doesn't make them bad people...just jealous people. You're a smart guy, you already know that. Now, the WEIGHT ISSUE. LOL i will make this short. On a personal level, you are the one who has to live with it. If its not a problem for you, thats fine, screw anyone who thinks otherwise. On a professional level, were you anything other than a fitness trainer, it wouldn't be a problem. Here's how i see it handsome. You sell your ability to improve bodies. If i was looking for a fitness trainer i'm going to look for someone who has a body close to what i want for myself, even if someone else may not have that body, but have superior knowledge. Right or wrong, your body is part of your credentials. Ok, i'm done harping. I will continue to watch the show whether i agree or disagree with what you do or say. If i disagree too much, thats what blogs are for !! Take care and i'll see you tuesday night.

Brad.

Jesse! HEy im a religous watcher of workout, and I can honestly say you are one of the main reasons i watch it. You are a total hottie! But anyways i just wanted to say im 17 and all my life i have dealt with being over weight and well now watching the show has inspired me to loose weight. I was 188 and now im 180 (18% body fat) as of weighing myself today, and anyways i just wanted you to know i wish that you wouldnt loose weight cuz when you think that your fat it makes me feel like a whale! Cuz i think you got a great body and to hear the show poke fun of you makes me think "hey being a stocky guy might not be sexy" Personally i have grown to love my genes and accept that i wont be mr. abercrombie but i will be a sexy stocky guy that is confident ...and lets be serious confidence is hot! Anyways I love ya on the show and i think you are great just how you are SERIOUSLY!

You may have had a little tummy...but it wasnt that bad...everyone cheats every so often...true that you should look great if you are training others to look great lol...You have a funny personality...I know you learned from the past to clarify peoples intentions of what they say before you assume...you know what they say when you assume...I always ask...hey "this is how I heard that", "Is that what you meant". So sorry for the loss you guys endured. I know we are seeing these shows late...I know its hard to see a friend gravitate towards someone they love and you cant hang as much. Key word..have alot of friends lol...Whats the recipe on that shake you and Jackie made on one of the most recent shows?
