Steven: Hardly Famous, And Kind of Poor

How are people responding to the show that you’ve seen? Is it the gayest show ever?
I think Queer Eye has us beat …but everyone’s - how they’ve been responding to me on the show. I’ve gotten lots of love, so. It’s been great that way. In fact, I was doing something so pedestrian as waiting for the bus at Michigan Ave. yesterday. And there were no buses coming, so I just kept walking north. And at every stop I wound up at, there was someone from, you know, teenagers, up to their mid-forties, saying weird things like "we're rooting for you, we love you on the show." I don't know what to say other than, you know, "Watch What Happens!"

Chicago needs more celebrity. What do you hope the exposure helps you to do?
You know, it's kind of funny. I'm here and I'm trying to drum up new business and so forth. But I think people forget tha tyou're not a TV star, that you're actually a designer. And when you point that out, they say, "yeah, I hadn't thought of that..." ANd they also assume that now that I've been on the television, my prices have sky rocketed, which is...actually a little ridiculous when I think about it. They haven't. It's bizarre. And while I love the attetnio, because I have my moments (we all do) when I'm an enormous attention whore. And I start to think. "You know, it would be fun to have my own show..." I get these hucksters writing into blogs saying things like, "that kids hilarious, get him his own show," and I think, "that's a brilliant idea!" And then, "I hope someone at Bravo reads that..."

What did you think when the models came out on the runway?
I was too bowled over by the wedding dress itself, taking in the dress, that I couldn’t see the person. That’s one thing I try to avoid in my clothing and what I design is I try to avoid dresses that overpower the individual so that you can’t see their faces.

What do you think about designing for the “Everyday Woman?”
You know, actually… that’s the majority of my work. In fact, the very first project I had when I got back was designing a wedding dress for a local woman who I think was possibly a size 20, if I’m not mistaken. And so it was kind of funny to go and design for her and make her so happy with what I had designed, and totally get panned for something I had done three weeks before. It was kind of ironic. Designing for the “regular market,” that’s something I do on a regular basis. In fact, that’s pretty much all I do.

Jack goes home. What happened in that room for you guys? What was going on?
It was just incredibly difficult because, being Jack’s roommate, I got know him more than, say, Christian or anyone else, and so I knew how much he wanted to be there, and I knew how much he had given up in terms of a job, and financial security to be on the show. And then, to have to lose that, just because of some fluke thing, it just seemed horribly unfair.

What was the lag between when Jack left and Chris came back?
I don’t even know. It was maybe five or ten minutes after that. I was like, “whoa!” It was like a roller coaster. Jack’s gone, oh how awful, and then Chris is back!"

My God! Did I suffer when Steven didn't make it to the next round! He is just adorable... I guess that I had a crush on him... just ask my boyfriend! lol

But well, good things will come his way. And thanks for being open and honest about who you are, you are definetly an example to many gay youth.

Steven, you were my absolute favorite, and I think it would be a GREAT IDEA for Bravo (or some station) to produce a Steven Show! Your wit, intelligence, and compassion are characteristics that need promotion in today's world.

You're a good man and I wish you the best in life.

Steve, I'm so sad that those wretched disasters they call judges decided your time was up on the show. What kind of fantastic things could be done with yards of wedding-dress sequence??

Steven, you are a fantastic designer. Yes you didn't do that well on the 'challange'. But to me, that doesn't mean that you don't have talent.

You (like Carmen)have AMAZING talent. The suit that you designed in one of the challanges was something that I could have worn, and like your 'model' I am not (by any means) a size 2.

But considering my body type, I could have worked that suit.

I have no doubts Steven, that you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams. Just hang in there, and know we're all rooting for you.

As for you being Gay, Straight or whatever; Who cares? As long as you are a great designer ...

NO ONE!

Other than the 'last challange' your work speaks for itself.

Steven, I live in Chicago -- seriously can we be friends? You're freaking hilarious and I wished you'd been on longer.

Steven You are a very talented designer. Inspite of being aufed, I know you will continue to excel as a designer.

As for the designers who ran to help you, I was also touched by that. I know alot of people in this world who would not have done what they did.

They would have said "This is a competition, so let the man sink."

It's refreshing to see people who aren't like that.

I have so much respect for the designers this season. They have alot of class. And they have intregrity to spare.

We can all learn from the example that both you, and the other designers give.

JS wrote:

Steven added a little sophistication to the show. He's a hunk but he pretends (I believe) not to know which is refreshing. I thought his designs were wonderful but the last design was a little off but sophisiticated which is always Steven. Yes, sophisticated but a little off - in a good way...LOL...just teasing Steven. Love you!!!I love Steven and wish him the very best.

Steven, You are the greatest. Your wit, personality and taste will take you far.
By the way, if you are interested in a great guy, hit me up!

David wrote:

Hi there Steven,

You should not have been auf'ed. They gave you a Wedding Dress or cripe sake! Lets see M.Kors make something outta that.. Bitches.
i'll miss you on the show. I agree with the other posters... you're adorable! And if you still can't find anyone to date... well, come to San Diego, I'll take care of that.

Wish you the best.

Elizabeth wrote:

Oh Steven I'm so sorry for you...you really did have a very tough "fabric" to work with. Undoubtedly, though with your personality and great skills, you'll go far in the fashion industry! :)
